What the heck is with this talk on twitter that the flight paths for 17R/35L shifted more westward? Are they simply confusing approach paths to the runway?

A guy in Bridgeland swears they are turning slightly west to pass closer over them, but Nick has pointed out many times that has not been the case and never was (except turboprop turns).

Is the CAA trying to confuse the matter with the new runway and the 15 degree turn after departure?

My hypothesis is that new noise off old runway is due to intensity of operations being increased at peak times.

Everything departing off 17R now goes West. Before some flights did a turn to the east before Bridgeland, residents would never hear this eastbound traffic. Also back in the single primary runway days, departing aircraft would have to wait for arrivals. With two runways splitting up the job there is greater intensity of departures to a single direction.

For example on my departure yesterday morning off 17L, there was no traffic on the arrival, no wait on departure but two other aircraft (the AC and WS 8am departures to YYZ) taxiing for 17L. On 17R there was also departing aircraft. On the old days there would be a mandatory wait for arrival traffic and stack of 4-6 aircraft waiting to take off. My guess for yesterday on 17L was UA 8:15am departure, AC 8:16am departure and WS 8:17am departure. Last year there would have been UA hold for arrival at 8:15, departure at 8:16, hold for arrival at 8:17, Departure to the east 8:18, departure to the west at 8:19, hold for arrival at 8:20.

I love it! I'm pretty much right at GABET, the IF for runway 20. With 12/30 closed, it's been an airshow over our building for the last month. I wouldn't mind 12/30 staying closed forever.

Has there been any talk of an airside bus transfer for Westjet's international connections. I suppose that would be hard to work with the arriving customs issue and departing US pre clearance, but it's a long, long walk from the end of the D pier to the end of the east leg of the international / transborder facility. Failing an airside option, are they planning some sort of facilitation of transfers on the pre-security side. I'd hate to be old and/or disabled and have to navigate that trip on foot while schlepping bags.

Westjet Int'l and Transborder Winter update

Despite us losing MIA, there will actually be more international and transborder flying this winter compared to last.

LAS goes to 21 weekly from 20
PSP goes to 16 weekly from 14
PHX goes to 19 weekly from 17

SJD goes to daily from 6 weekly
CUN goes to 10 weekly from 8
PVR goes to 9 weekly from 7
LTO new one weekly

So total 118 weekly transborder/international compared to 113 last year. Amazing!

I'll look at domestic later....

I feel like there's still room for more seats on LAS-YYC, if Rouge wanted to add another frequency.

Yup... That's what they are doing at YVR starting in late September.

...or a perfect launch route for Allegiant's Canadian operations.....

No chance for transfer bus operation. The airport is building a sterile (behind security) transfer corridor between the A and B concourses. This transfer corridor will also be straight rather than follow curvature of the Banff trail hall. The corridor is straight so that moving sidewalks can be added. Additionally, the corridor is wide enough to handle gold carts.

On the concourse A side, security station is being moved and expanded. All ready gone is the Tim hortons, flippers video games, childrens play area, and the escalator to arrivals. Security screening will move into this area. Additionally the Air Canada Maple Leaf Lounge is being moved and expanded. The transfer corridor will open between MLL and security station.

The first few months of international operations I will be rough for Westjet connections. Once the US pre-clearance is transferred to the new terminal, the transfer corridor will be constructed through the hall, security screening area, and concourse C duty free retail area.

Demand on YYC-LAS could handle one more flight, however AC does not have spare aircraft to increase frequency.

One option is to put the 763 ACr onto YYZ-LAS-YVR route and then transfer 319 onto double daily YYC-LAS.

Bingo. In any large city, plenty of people have no problem living next to an airport, and dealing with the noise. Or, property values will be a bit lower and those who want to save a few bucks can take advantage of that, at the cost of some noise. Either way, it works out. And everyone benefits, because the airport remains really close.

I'm on the other side of the city from the airport, and it takes me about 17 minutes in average traffic from door to parking. Unbelievably convenient when you visit the airport as often as I do.

This isn't 1955 and the concept of jet engine noise is something new. Anyone who's not past retirement should have realized there was a goddamn airport in the NE. If you're the type who doesn't like the noise, as I am - why the hell buy a house anywhere close to it? There's an entire 3/4 of the city to choose from!

That's me.

I travel a lot and it is virtually always after 1:00AM after I am out of customs and with my bags. I can be from curb to bed in ten minutes at that time of night.

I can't even contemplate a similar slog at that hour to what awaits me at LAX.

About 8:00 pm today ( July 23 ) a B737 took off on 17 R and maintained runway heading as usual. But then another B737 appeared almost out of no where - I think it took off on 17R as well - but did a right turnout over 64 avenue and center street - heading west - south - west. Thought this was kind of unusual to have 2 planes take off so close together - off the same runway.

Before the parallel opened, they used to do that all day long off both runways (with a left turn off 17R though), though it'd be a prop turning out in front with a jet going straight out after because noise abatement prohibits jet turns. I believe the rule is that you can launch a second departure if he sees the first guy and there's more than 30 degree divergence, and he's okay for wake turbulence.

I don't know what the separation standard is for straight out departures... but WestJet has a little west coast departure bank of 5 or 6 guys right at 22:30... and they'd come off 29 like the Snowbirds, one after the other. One would lift and the next would be rolling, almost.

This could have been a case where the second 737 was actually on approach to land and the first one was slow to depart so ATC or the pilots initiated a go around. In that case the noise abatement and all that jazz go out the window, and they were probably given that heading for separation during the go around.

Tower's also allowed to depart planes using visual departures, where the pilot assumes responsibility for sep'n. Basically, the nose wheel on #1 comes up and the second starts his roll, so on and so forth. Depending on the types involved (and what metal the pilot's balls are made of), they can sometimes be quite spectacular, particularly when the second departure is a Lear or Hawker... Maybe that's what you saw between those '37's.

We did - it was about 6:45 or so. We were heading to a park (seque to the Calgary Roads discussion on people who still take their kids to playgrounds) and I saw a lady videoing something in the sky. Lo and behold, look up and there they are.

Thanks for giving us this great rundown Johnny!

Any way we can see stats on the AC side of things?
