Agreed, that bus turn can be atrocious. I'm expecting Parliament and Rae to get lights soon. That is a pedestrian and car nightmare. Especially with people now going stright through the intersection using the right turning lanes a lot of the time.

Yeah, I see taxis doing it all the time (I despise taxi drivers for their sense of entitlement on the roads!) and more recently just regular drivers. And there is so much pedestrian traffic that it all adds up to accidents waiting to happen.

Last month the city had those traffic-measuring cables lying on the ground at every intersection and section of Rae St from 25th to Gordon, so it looks like they are trying to come up with a plan for that stretch of road. I think a light at Parliament and Rae is needed, but I hope they don't put stop signs anywhere else. Rae St is actually much faster to use than Albert most of the time.

Agreed. Although, at some times, Sunset & Rae can be really scary. It's difficult to see past all the parked cars, people come whipping out of the condo parking lots right when you're about to turn, and to top it off it's a marked pedestrian walkway that gets used regularly. In the future I'd like to see a similar setup as was done at MacPherson Ave & Hillsdale Street.

Long time reader, first time poster.

Does anyone know the reason why they put the curbs up so high on the road work done to Broad Street (by the Wascana Drive turn offs) this summer? It looks terrible and creates a high slope which seems very odd. Unless they are planning on eventually raising all the road up higher is the only thing I can think of.

I wish the City would put 5% of the effort into repairing roads as they do to repairing curbs and sidewalks in the city.....

They are going to recap the road when all the concrete work is done

A small, new facility at Regina’s Wascana Lake could help attract bigger sporting events to the city.

The ribbon was cut to officially open the Pine Island Finishing Line Facility on Thursday morning. The $250,000 building will allow judges, officials and volunteers to watch rowing, canoe and other racing events inside an enclosed facility.

“This is a facility lake users have been waiting for and wanting for years,” said Wascana Centre Authority CEO Bernadette McIntyre.

She explained how they were always told the lake was one of the top venues in Canada for racing events, but what would make it even better was to have a facility such as this. Now McIntyre believes Wascana Lake could be in the top five.

Mayor Michael Fougere realizes that as well and says he thinks Regina could use this to secure bigger competitions in the future.

“We have applications in for other events, nationally and internationally,” he said.

Fougere didn’t rule out trying to land an event like the Pan Am Games but admitted no formal application has been submitted.

I've noticed an increase in cab drivers who tell me they're from Ontario (Toronto, usually - some from Ottawa). Viewing the right lane strictly as a "turn lane" is just not a thing in Ontario - matter of fact, when I moved back to Sask, I had to get used to staying out this completely unused lane once again.

Same goes for going around cars turning left -- the right-hand (curb) lane is used for this in every Ontario city I've been in. It's just how driving works there - drivers know it & pedestrians know it.

Yeah, I've also seen a large increase in the past few years of vehicles turning at controlled intersections. 31st and Alberta in the south end is very bad for it. They even have a giant sign with a no u-turn indication, but it doesn't stop anyone. I go through that intersection everyday and it's the most unsafe in the city in terms of people running red lights, making illegal turns, and ESPECIALLY not noticing when the light turns red, and they are sitting in the intersection waiting to make a left on to 31st. The city NEEDS to put a control light in the middle of the intersection on the median like all other intersections on south Albert, but they've just never done it. So cars creep out waiting to turn, and then they get so far they can't even see their own light any more. Then when the light turns red they sit there confused as all of the oncoming traffic has stopped, and they take 5 seconds to turn. That screws the people going from 31st to Albert as that green light (which is not automatic, it triggers via a sensor) only lasts 4-5 seconds.

I should actually email the city about that. And even though those lights have been there for over a decade people still don't seem to know it, and routinely just drive right through a red light. I have no idea why.

This absolutely astounds me about Regina drivers. On roads like Arcola, I will often purposely drive in the far right (3rd) lane just to make a point even when the other lanes are clear. Of course the City has never created right hand turn lanes on Arcola, because this lane would never be used for thorough traffic, right?

I typically don't do it on roads with a lot of intersections. There is nothing worse than coming up to say, Albert and Parliament and having 15 cars lined up waiting to turn because some guy in an Alberta plate wants to driving in the right lane on south Albert. And what makes it worse is that south Albert actually doesn't have a right driving lane, it is for parking and turning. On roads like Lewvan I get driving in the right lane since there are fewer intersections and there is no parking.

But having the right lane be turning-only makes it a lot easier and predictable to turn onto major roads. Since so many people suck as drivers and only indicate they are turning at the last second, it makes it tough to judge when to enter onto a street if everyone is driving in the rightmost lane.

Obviously it depends on the street, but on roads with on-street parking allowed I never driving in that lane, and I get annoyed when other people do.

I think this is at least a uniquely Regina "thing," (possibly Sask). It seemed natural before I moved away, but then when I moved back & encountered "gridlock," it made me laugh - a decent portion is self-induced.

Forget the zipper merge, if we could get people to drive in the right-hand lane on Arcola, Vic Ave East (between Park & the Ring Road especially), and Albert south of 25th (get rid of on-street parking, screws up sight lines, needlessly congests) traffic "congestion" would be eased immensely.
