I have a friend that lives in Yankee Valley, and even when it was just 35/17 they'd get lots of traffic overflying them heading for 17.

So hopefully ''flow control'' is gone or drastically reduced.

A old friend of mine used to fly a Metroliner between YEG-YYC on mail runs and would curse when departure times got pushed later due to flow.

With our second runway at CUN we have become a helluva lot more efficient in the last 5 years with departures being allocated to either 12L/30R or 12R/30L and arrivals to the opposing runway.

Yup, but the office remains at MMUN and I'm doing both basically (Mexican job descriptions) aren't very clear and definitive as I later told my employer.

I actually don't really even go over to the island very often.

Makes it handy not having to commute daily then hop the ferry. However we are likely moving a little closer to Puerto Morelos.

Most likely as they appear to be sticking to the plan with departures. Airport doesn't seem overly busy and FedEx just went off 17L, making the trip all the way from apron 7. That must be annoying. WestJet to YWG... instead of a 1 minute taxi to 17R they now have a 10+ minute taxi to 17L, which is about how long it takes to the threshold of 35L. Just did some measuring in Google Earth... from spot 6: it's about a 13,000 ft taxi to 35L threshold, and 12,000 ft to 35R. Well that's interesting.

Everyone wins in the long run of course, and it's nothing compared to the trip in after landing on 10/28 at ATL or something... but still a bit annoying.

Been some talk about noise with the new flight paths so I had a look: the green line is exactly (ADS-B position) where the 17L final is... WestJet 129 YQR-YYC on a 10 mile final establishes just north of Airdrie, and pretty much tracks East Lake Blvd south in Airdrie. Airplanes overhead isn't really new for them, anyone from the east turning ~9 miles final for 17R passed almost right over them anyway. At exactly 3 miles final, the track passes right over the Cross Iron Mills parking lot; lots of shoppers will be looking skyward, no doubt... it's actually a nice view of the 17R final from the west side of Cross Iron Mills anyway.

Then they pass just east of the Stoney/Deerfoot mega interchange at 1.5 miles final, whose SB-EB flyover is very high and would be a very nice view... then there's basically nothing between that and the threshold. So overall, a very polite final to the neighbours, which has me a bit baffled as to why 29 is still being used for "noise" at night and rattling Falconridge/Castleridge to pieces. Whatevs.

I'll do the 35R final as well, if anyone is interested.

LOL. Hasn't the runway been on the books since the 70s? People really don't look into things eh? Can we find some 727s and 737s without hushkits to run for a week, then announce noise control measures, and return to normal operations? The residents will end up somewhat happy.

I think the earliest reference to the parallel was '79, but I bet it was on the books even before that.

I do like your idea though.

Oh my god that global segment was a stomach churner, 767's every 5 minutes screaming bloody mary, Gerbils man.
The only good part of that segment was the double arrival footage Aaron posted which looked juicy indeed. Just pan over a little bit more and you get the downtown skyline...Ultra drool.

Speaking of which, 0945 local tomorrow morning, we have one of the Emirate Sheikhs visiting onboard a private heavy direct from Abu Dhabi from my buddy source.
I will wake up early tmrw to verify this and make my way to the new runway to try out the spots myself. No chopper this time.

You guys who understand airplane stuffs better than me can help, maybe.

How can a parallel runway suddenly introduce noise into an area that didn't have planes before? I'm no geometry major and I'm certainly no acoustical engineering dude, but aren't the runways about 2km apart? Is that a huge difference in noise? I live like 15 km from the airport as the crow flies, and even at my place I can sometimes hear noises. Falconridge is like 5 - what the heck did they expect?

Duuuuuuude, nice.

I'll be around work tomorrow morning so I'll bring my camera gear with me and maybe catch the arrival. I'm going to assume it will use the new runway coming from the east.

I live in Martindale near the Superstore and it's trade off . Reduced traffic on the east/west runway. In my hood noise complaints are primarily about after market mufflers. Oh, and the huge increase in the magpie population - man do they squawk!!

Since the opening of the new runway the only really noisey take off had to be an early morning departure of a Hercules. I can't think of anything louder.

15 minutes of fame on the local TV news. Given the incentive of being on local TV news, I bet I could find someone living in Aspen Woods that will claim sleepless nights over the new runway.

Southview is about the only Calgary community that would have any valid gripe about more noise from the new runway. Even then its not that big of an overall increase in noise. The noise readings mentioned on Global news were probably emanating from sources other than airplanes.

The 767 comment was laughable. I enjoyed the story for its comedy. I also wonder how many takes it took to get the right comment. My guess is the first take mentioned 737, however Global Calgary is loathsome to mention Westjet in bad light. My best guestimate would be the people would be complaining about constant Westjet aircraft over their head, but instead Global reporter would have them drop any Westjet reference and just go with something generic.

When watching Global News I am always interested in how they portray Westjet in good light, AC is always the bad guy, anything bad about WS is glossed over or not reported, anything good about AC is not reported. Examples:
- CTV and CBC mentioned first takeoff on new runway was AC9, Global only shot the first landing and the rest of the story excluded AC.
- Covering the strike by AC passenger agents, very pregnant Mia Sosiak went down checkin line of 12 people asking if anyone had negative comments about AC. She would not entertain positive stories about how the line up was shorter than usual and the service faster.
- Global news shows up about lengthy delays for WS christmas traffic. WS execs hand out pizza for 15 minutes while Global news shoots the story. Global wraps up when the Pizzas are gone. Reporter heads over to AC and asks crowd for negative comments about AC service.

Has anyone used that Google Flights search engine for booking flights? Looking at one-way flights for YYC-LAX, LAX-OGG, and OGG-YYC for next year. Just wondering if it is worth my time or if there are any unexpected hassles using it to book.

Those communities (albeit sparse) under the approach path must be laughing their asses off at complaints from those below 35R. To put it succinctly, the noise footprint as a whole has probably come down 25+% with the switch to north/south ops. 'Nuf said. They can go stuff themselves. Agreed, send a few screamers off 17L every morning at 6 am and then they'll realize how good they've got it....
