For me bottom 1/3 reminds me of something that would be built as a building at the Royal Alex. Top 2/3 of building I don't have a problem with cept color of brick. Charcoal or brown please.

Basically...its a total mess.

To all Fathers out there....Happy Fathers Day

A few photos from my trip to Van including some interesting ideas for an urban park, streetscapes that are very well done, better material choices and a reminder of how important great street fronting retail is to the urban fabric.

Opponents of demolition gather for concert on footbridge

Elizabeth Withey
Edmonton Journal

Monday, June 16, 2014

Fans of the city's downtown footbridge who are holding out hope the city will rethink its plan to demolish the picturesque river crossing gathered at the site for an open-air concert Sunday afternoon.

The second annual Concert on the Bridge in support of the footbridge's preservation drew several hundred people , some of them members of the Save Edmonton's Downtown Footbridge group, others passersby on foot or bike who didn't know much about the issue...

Editorials: Don’t kick sand at urban beach proposal

Edmonton Journal
June 16, 2014 6:33 AM

If life’s a beach, Edmonton ought to have one.

That means city council should warm to a proposal for a sandy recreation area near the bank of the North Saskatchewan River in Louise McKinney Park. Though this isn’t a new idea, the proposal is heading back to council twice the size as previously imagined.

Some grumps may look upon the idea as silly or somehow un-Edmontonian, but an 800-square-metre beach is a feature that would be a fun addition to the city’s recreational offerings...

Finally had enough and sent this into roadways/311. There was drainage work done here last fall and this was how it was left... which is fine given that winter had arrived, but I hope this is not how it is to be left now.

*sigh* I really hope these people don't end up getting the city to delay or reroute the SELRT.

ETA: I just fired off a quick email to Henderson and Iveson:

Councillor Henderson and Mayor Iveson,

I am a resident of Ward 8, and both an avid cyclist and regular transit user. I have been following the "Save Our Footbridge" campaign since it started, as I use the bridge twice every day as part of my bike commute from spring through fall. I just wanted to write you quickly to let you know that - despite being a regular user of this bridge - I still fully support the city and council on the current SELRT plans which require removal of the existing bridge in order to construct a new LRT river crossing.

I want to make sure council understands that not every user of this bridge agrees with this group, which has been playing fast and loose with the facts to generate an emotional response to gain sympathy from the public. I for one understand that there will be a short term loss of the current bridge in order to have the long-term gain of a brand new footbridge that also carries LRT into many neighbourhoods that have been anxiously awaiting this much needed transit improvement. I'm certain that I am not the only one.

Please, do not let this group and their tactics delay LRT expansion any further. We can't afford to keep delaying transit improvements in our rapidly growing city.

Thank you for your time.

On another road issue - why are there metal plates on the recently completed new section of Jasper Avenue? Particularly annoying since construction on this section took so long.

Their ultimate goal is to reroute the SELRT as they don't want it going through their neighbourhood. The whole "save our footbridge" thing is simply a way of masking NIMBYism. If it was really about the loss of a footbridge, then the fact that the LRT bridge has a pedestrian component would have alleviated some of their concerns:

^ Could very well be the case, in which it would just further the case of how dishonest this group really is.

They chose the yellow brick so as to tie it into the synagogue, with which it's associated, next door.

and if it was really about "the instability of the soil", they wouldn't be trying to replace a portal that exits between two old mines with a route that would place an elevated structure squarely on top of 8 old mines per their own maps. they do however do a pretty good job of documenting the riverdale "we're right and anybody who disagrees with us is wrong despite what the facts really are" for those that need a head shake to start the week ( http://www.riverdalians.net/league.php ).

just history and intuition...

i'm sure their minutes would disclose - one way or the other - but those aren't available on-line.

as for those that write in the riverdalian, there is apparently no limit to those that take up the cause[s]. for those that don't, it used to be a one-time 400 words.

Looks like their community newsletter should be re-branded to "Save our Footbridge Post". It is the majority of all the past issues as of late.

From the recent newsletter:

"Riverdale League President Bill Moore-Kilgannon continues to pressure Council to make public the Request For Proposal process"

Wouldn't you be surprised to know that Bill as head of Public Interest Alberta has made the same request.

He wants the entire process to fail.
