Yeah with that guy who is very on the ball and we know exactly the routes he does, still gets in the way and takes a lot of work. It's the nature of having intersecting runways that every region near the airport is in the way.

If we had parallels like LAX then you could be a half mile on either side and not be an issue. It will change a bit with the new runway, but the offset nature will make it still a large airport with a big area of influence around the zone.

You would think for the Airport Authority photo flights they could have just gone up in a 172 or 182 with a door off and shot from a much higher altitude. Not like the project isn't giant and looks best when viewed from up high.

^ Thanks for the feedback guys. Much appreciated and I am glad I am able to ask this question in advance on a discussion forum where ATC folks use on their available time from their work to answer with honesty and realism. I rather have this be discussed and tossed around here than at the airport when I try to bring that request to ATC prior to my flight when you guys are already in a high workload environment.

I am also aware of the lone R44 that does the progress shots of the airport hired thru the YYCAA but I am not likely allowed to tag along on that ride. I suppose the challenges of allowing this is still too risky at this time, I might just forget about it then. Maybe once new rwy ops is in full effect and the X-Wind rwys are seldom used I make the request for a photo orbit. I realize this kind of request has never been attempted before otherwise there would already be pictures of air to air yyc action.

There is one silver lining I have discovered, LR Helicopters will be in attendance for Wings and Wheels this weekend and will be doing sight seeing flights over the city. Part of their routing involves an overflight of the new runway possibly to offer a view of all the static items before turning south to do their loop. I may just tag along for one of those rides and request an deviation of the plan to do a teardrop loop over the new runway up to Juilet/midfield and return back to base thus covering photo ops of the static from the east and west ends.
Altitude would be whatever taxiing/approach height under pilot discretion. Probably similar to how Stars and HAWC maneuver around the airfield. Even a static coverage would be fine.

For the 787 departure, yes just PM me the punch codes to get into the old tower and I can gladly make my way up to the cab for some stellar views. I'll even dedicate my best shots to Nav Canada!

This weekend will certainly be a high exposure event for yyc and I just want to see if I can help show this through my photos. Plug a few shots on this board, airliners and jetphotos.net and see the rest of the world take notice. Not to mention Wings and Wheels will happen at the Air Museum for those who are into warbirds.

^ I can also PM a revised flight plan showing my intent and trust me, it won't be as ambitious as the previous version. It looks like both main helicopter operators will be covering Wings and Wheels event this weekend with nonstop sightseeing flights at the museum.

Anyone know if this weekend's (secret) 787 flight is going to be rev. or non rev?

Any chance AC will load either the inbound or outbound YYZ-YYC 787 flight into their online reservation system? Or will it just be a tail swap for one of the 320/321 rotations without any advance notice?

Just curious, I have no reason to be on it, but it would be nice for the enthusiasts if they loaded it into the online system, encourage some more folks to come out west for the wknd

I wish they would schedule a short flight, YYC to YEG and back or something, i'd book a J ticket for that

I've been keeping an eye on the skeds, but still nothing loaded in yet. I bet we don't even know until the flight plan shows up in FlightAware, unless someone from AC mentions it before hand.

It sounds like all the static aircraft are supposed to be in position by about 3am Sunday morning.

When the new runway opens, will it operate as an alternative to the original north-south runway, or would it be operated in parallel to the older runway (i.e. one for take-off, one for landings, perhaps just during busier times)? If the latter, I assume that the new (longer) runway would be used for take-off?

The parallels will be used for both, as I understand it a lot depends on where the traffic is arriving from/departing to.

I would assume that generally, Takeoff on the Rs, and landing on the Ls, especially when using 17's. Using the 35s might be a bit more mixed.

AC rep on flyertalk says noting planned at the moment re: commercial flights to/from YYC for the 787 being shown at RTR.

If you check out the earlier posts on the thread, there was a time when a bunch of Flyertalkers went out and purchased seats on the 787 flights that later had tail swap. Once the tail swap was completed the passengers wanted special exemption to allow them a full refund because their purpose for taking the trip had evaporated. Since that time, no AC rep has quantified where the 787 familiarization flights are located.

I'm dating myself here, but I remember that day. Me and some friends skipped school and road our bikes up there to see it. We were in Grade 5 at the time.

During normal operations... landings/takeoffs east on the east runway, landings/takeoffs west on the west. Somebody going west would have to be anomalously heavy to need the east runway.

They'll get around to crossing ops eventually: in Toronto they switch it up all the time, even while the guy is already in the downwind, or they'll give vectors overhead the field for the opposite downwind, more guys landing on the south if there's departures backing up for the north, etc.

I remember it as well. My Dad was a design engineer on the 767 so he was a plane geek. We went to see the Concorde at YYC. I must have been around 7 or 8.
