Conceptual versions 2a and 2b of the future park for 105st/102ave. A steering committee/working group will be re-formed in the next month or so to further evaluate the design while the rezoning is taking place. Detailed design will start in fall, with approval required for the $2mil line item in the CRL before the end of the year to proceed with construction documents and the ability to tender this in late winter/early spring so we can be under-construction by May/June 2015!!!

If you are interested in being on the committee, visit www.decl.org and send us an email.

As are we/most people. We had always intended the dog play area/run to be along the alley for a variety of reasons.

I also prefer the single water feature, hopefully with a fountain

I think a lot of why it's still busy in the mall, even when it's nice outside is simply habit. As a downtown worker, it takes a while for me to retrain my brain every May to acknowledge the fact that there are places outside to go (eg. restaurants/coffee shops).

Seems like a strange thing to market, but maybe there should be a campaign to market the fact that there is an outside. Maybe there is and I just haven't seen it.

There are various reasons why people still choose pedways even in summer. No smokers, no car exhaust, no dust, less chance of being harassed by panhandlers, minimizing sun exposure, air conditioning on a hot day, no waiting for traffic signals, sidewalk closures due to construction. They are not all good reasons (some are illusionary), but those are ones I've heard.

Dog area need to be reduced in size...to 1/2 what it is ... The designs are showing dog space about the size of what's really left for people minus food truck. Someone needs to wake up. In Paris the public areas get full sun and dog runs are against a building wall and in the most discrete place in the park. The designs need rework IMO.

Another great addition to our waste management facility.

Mayor @doniveson says with this facility, 90 percent of #yeg's waste will be diverted from landfill by 2016 #cbc

World's first municipal waste-to-biofuels facility opens in Edmonton

Officials from the Government of Alberta, City of Edmonton, and Enerkem Alberta Biofuels celebrated the opening of the first industrial-scale facility to produce biofuels from municipal solid waste.

The Waste-to-Biofuels and Chemicals Facility located at the Edmonton Waste Management Centre is owned and operated by Enerkem. The City of Edmonton will supply 100,000 tonnes of sorted municipal waste that will be converted into biofuels and chemicals. This is the waste that cannot be composted or recycled and that would otherwise be sent to landfills.

“The City of Edmonton is a world leader in sustainable waste management and the opening of the Waste-to-Biofuels and Chemicals Facility demonstrates our commitment to finding innovative solutions to harness the value in waste,” said Mayor Don Iveson. “This type of leading-edge innovation demands a team approach and we're proud of our partnership with Enerkem and Alberta Innovates – Energy and Environment Solutions."

The facility is part of a larger collaboration between Enerkem, the Government of Alberta through Alberta Innovates – Energy and Environment Solutions and the City of Edmonton. This waste-to-biofuels initiative also includes a waste preparation facility and a world-class Advanced Energy Research Facility.

The City of Edmonton currently diverts up to 60 per cent of residential waste from landfills primarily through recycling and composting. This facility will enable the City to increase its diversion rate from 60 to 90 per cent by 2016.

^ There are a surprising number of dog owners downtown, and there really are no dog parks nearby as it is. It's not a bad idea.

That said, these plans do feel a bit like they're trying to be all things to everyone. That may or may not end up being a good thing in itself, but given that the land is currently a parking lot, it will be a vast and welcome improvement regardless.

Plus isn't there plans for a bigger park nearby? I believe Councillor Colonel Sanders alluded to as such.

This remains my fear. It's like a crossover vehicle or a 70's domed stadium....it can do just about everything.....but does everything poorly.

^^ unlikely but possible.

These are still very conceptual, so post comments and we can note them or send an email to DECL.

I think version 2a is almost perfect in many ways. There new parks in yaletown and downtown toronto have dog areas similar to these and are very very popular.

Good point.

When in NYC last Oct. The dog parks in Manhattan obviously were small because of real estate. But We have space to open it up for Fido.

The "hat" on top of the Pearl is brighter than I was expecting. People on Twitter have been comparing it to a Shriner's Fez hat...
