Hmm are Joey's and Earls owned by the same parent company? If not it seems strange that Earl's would allow an almost identical restaurant to open right next to them on property they own. I however hope this happens because the amount of surface parking on that side of Main is awful.

That Subway has a great atmosphere. It's nice to see them have a slightly different look (it's branded "Subway Cafe" on the window) because I personally don't like the look of the current subway interiors, and they are the same all over the world!

Say what anybody will, Earl's and Joey's side-by-side on Main St., marking one of the entrances to the Forks (and eating some surface parking as Kris22 alluded to) would be a pretty big win. They are drivers of customers - they have a magnetic appeal. It would further bring life to that small section Main.

Had 6am breakfast this morning at the new Tim Hortons on Plessis Rd in the Kildonan Green Sobeys mall. (2nd customer in the door, first opening day the contractors were still walking out with their tools ).

I saw that they have at baseboard level for most of the tables and booths a combination electric outlet and usb charger. I guess they now want to encourage people to stay and linger unlike the old days when they had a sign saying 30 minute seating limit.

I don't recall if the other recent "new format" store location like Headmaster or Sage Creek have these outlets.

Talking to a buddy that is a PE (Electrical) for Fed Govt Public Works and he says that this is about a $125 installed cost per outlet, so Tim's must figure its worth it as they usually try to cut costs when building stores.

I had previously heard about the Earl's building a new location in their existing parking lot but I thought the end result was then to relocate the parking lot to where the existing building is. But a Joey's there would be good. Its a shame Grapes never hung on long enough across the street (I worked there in the 90's just after Earl's opened).

They used to be owned by the same parent company, which had Earls, Joey (Tomatoes) and the Cactus Club. however now Earls and Joeys are owned by separate people (brothers) and therefore would be in direct competition. It would be odd for this set up to occur (Earls selling to Joeys), but who knows.

It would be a shame to knock over a perfectly sound building, especially at the corner.

I don't think they have enough off street parking available for two restaurants in that location, if the existing lot is developed. If there is a Goldeye's game or big crowd at the Forks street parking can be at a premium as it.

I was thinking that too. We dont want surface lots but people need to park somewhere. Though the couple of times I was at the Goldeyes and walked to Earls, we couldnt even get it. Lots of foot traffic.

Is the lot next door, across from 180 Main, an Empark lot? When I worked at Grapes it was ours (leased or owned or whatever) as my first gig there was as parking lot attendant to prevent people from parking there at going anywhere else other than Grapes.

A new Joey's and Earl's side by side would be OK, but that location has the potential for so much more than just that. It's a prime location, high visibility, stone's throw from Portage and Main as well as the Forks, very accessible, awesome views... you would think that it would be a natural for a hotel, condo block or office building.

With all of the development going on downtown, you'd think this would be one of the first sites where something would happen.

Tim's in Marion St. strip mall (replaced Sal's) has tv's and fireplace, more of a hangout space too.

I've read articles about Tim's having a rebuild/redesign plan just like McDonalds has been executing, except it's not nearly as quick. Tim's just has too many Canadian locations to remodel and it's going to take years.

What Tim's are building now are called the "new Concept" stores. When you buy a franchise you agree to remodel to the current design format about 10 years in (1/2 way) through the life of the franchise agreement.

McDonald's normally does the same thing with store remodeling, but they did a 1 year blitz to change the format of their stores as part of the McCafe re-branding in Canada.

Both McDonalds and Tim's are trying to compete with the Starbucks and Second Cups for the higher end coffee crowd.

Was at the new Tim’s in Grand Forks a few weekends back and they call them “Tim Horton’s Café and Bake Shop” and when you order a coffee, they ask your name and then call you by name when it’s ready. Their donuts and pastries are stacked and displayed on cake trays and you can point to which one you want. Drove me nuts, just give me my f***’ing coffee!!!

I've heard, through a friend, that it will be a 7-Eleven. I'm not sure how credible they are as a source. There's one relatively close by already, at Pembina and Crane.
