Ah, well I just assumed that was in reply to my post.

I think getting the Olympics could speed up the process for both RES and the ESA. I'm not so sure, though, it can happen by the 2022 Olympics. That's eight years away, but the announcement on the host city will be next summer. So, that leaves seven years between the announcement and the Olympics.

Thing is, regardless of what the article says, Oslo is still officially vying for a bid, and so is Almaty, Lviv and Beijing - the latter three who have a legitimate chance of winning the Games, though Lviv could be undone by the Ukraine unrest (though, it might also bolster the bid since the Olympics are supposed to be a unifying theme).

But SLC becoming an option will only happen if those bids fail, which they probably won't, or a host city is granted the games and can't, for whatever reason, put 'em on. By that point, though, we're looking at a very short window where the Games would certainly be moved solely as a backup plan and the chances of actually updating venues will have been lost.

I'd much rather win the Games outright in 2026 and have the actual time to develop and plan for 'em instead of just offering to step in at the last minute.

So Delts posted this on the City Compilation page. This is a potential development plan for the prison site.

While I love the look of it and the density, I would really hate to see this take away from downtown business and development.. This is very aggressive.

I'm with Scott. That's about as likely as happening as the Lehi Gehry development. I'm sure something will be established there, but when you look at these pre-planned mega-developments, it's always important to take them with a grain of salt. A great deal of things have to work out for even half that to happen - and even then, we're talking a period of at least twenty-years (if not more).

Granted, Daybreak is an anomaly here, but even then, that was mostly residential (which seems to be far easier to develop, as demand is always higher, than a commercial center). My guess is that, in the coming years, this development will be scaled down considerably. Its events will probably mirror what's happened to the Cottonwood Mall site.

I'd rather this go to downtown Boise where it'll improve the city instead of Sandy where it'll pull development away from downtown SLC.

They did an episode of gangland about the tongue crypt gang several years ago it was an interesting watch... They were pretty bad in the 90s.. I was assaulted by them myself.

While I believe rehabilitation is important, I don't think this out weighs the potential and lost opportunity. Moving the prison to another less populated area also creates new opportunity with jobs, education etc for the new location. Possibly a smaller community needing a spark..

Volunteer opportunities are all over the place within feet of our front doors in a community of 1.2 million. I would also like to see southern SL county capture some of the boom happening in northern Utah County.

I'd like to see a smaller level mixed use development to tie into the rest of the recent development in Draper..

Anything is better than a prison.

That area is prime real estate and a tax gold mine.. The prison now is nothing but a bad tax burden to the public.. I would gladly pax extra tax to have this moved to out of sight-out of mind.

As we all know the prison site is at the epicenter of one of the five fastest growing, most dynamically developing areas of the nation. It's been that way for well over a decade, and is only increasing it's momentum as each year passes. Utenation is only pointing out something that is only too obvious.

As far as Tooele Valley being able to handle a strong volunteerism ethic, that's a very legitimate question. Well, it's not little country town Tooele anymore. Tooele is having it's own population boom, and has turned from a country pasture of a valley with hundreds, to a booming western segment of the metro with tens of thousands, soon to be hundreds of thousands. The strong volunteer ethic of Salt Lake & Utah Valley is not unique, it's something prevalent in all valleys of Utah, including Tooele.

There is not a lot that Salt Lake City can due to curb the enthusiasm for the Lehi/Draper area. There is no place that makes more sense as an alternate core to the historical cores than the Point of the Mountain area. As Utah Valley and Southern Salt Lake Valley bulldozes toward critical mass, as is being predicted, the writing on the wall for the Valley's borders is inevitable. I would much rather see a sector with a strong vertical core of mixed business residential, that is well connected to commuter and light rail, than another massive spread out business park. I also think that the Traverse Ridge area makes far more metro wide usage/growth sense than Sandy, and that's what we're seeing.

I would like to see a mixed use technology park theme with crazy incentives to lure more big business like Adobe.. The vision(renderings) is almost a day late and dollar short with the explosion already well underway in Lehi.. I understand the political roadblocks with moving a prison is the biggest process to move to the next level. Something like this could keep downtown going vertical with office space and condos.

But the right planning could tie it altogether and still get in while it's hot.


Like you said, the development isn't a matter of if, it's what and when..

Maximize revenue with smart planning(rail etc).
