I spoke with the project lead with the city yesterday and he told me that in design development they are working on plans for an exterior LED lighting element for the stadium but that they didn't want to commit too early to one type because technologies continue to improve. They want to be able to deliver the best when the doors open

Mighty fine looking stadium Regina. I expected nothing less. Nice that it will be roof ready but if the spectator roof it will have does the job of mitigating the wind and keeping fans relatively dry and comfortable, not sure you folks will ever want a fixed or retractable roof. $200 to $400 mil for a roof? Really?

Good catch. That's what I suspected would be done. The technology is high impact and dosnt cost all that much either.

I hope they keep the roof clean and not stick Mosaic branding in it.

Heard it explained that the roof itself is only step one. Step two is to fill in any open areas around the sides. Step three is heating/AC.

Makes sense. There's a lot more involved than just plopping a lid on top. Very impressive building even without a roof. The view travelling down sask drive should be interesting. Love everything I saw in the videos. The horseshoe design, sunk in the ground, spectator roof, I could go on. Can't wait to take in a game or concert.

So this stadium is going to be twice the size as the old one that's going to be crazy big

Very nice.... It looks like the one end zone has tiered standing room seats like you would see in a European soccer stadium. If that is so then I like that, always ends up being the (cheaper) rowdy section at those games. Having something like that in the new stadium is an interesting idea.

Which CFL team got the best stadium?
Saskatchewan Roughriders the latest CFL squad to unveil plans to build new home field
CBC News Posted: May 25, 2014 11:40 AM ET Last Updated: May 26, 2014 8:06 AM ET

Set to open in 2017, the new home of the Saskatchewan Roughriders will cost an estimated $278 million to complete. (Saskatchewan Roughriders)
The Hamilton Tiger-Cats are scheduled to move into their new 24,000-seat stadium when it’s completed this summer.

Winnipeg’s $210-million Investor Group Field held its first regular season Blue Bomber game last year during the team’s dismal 2013 campaign.

And now the Saskatchewan Roughriders are the latest Canadian Football League squad to unveil its plans to construct a new home stadium, expected to open in time for the 2017 season.

This is a once in a hundred year stadium for Saskatchewan, maybe once in 50 years. In my opinion The city/province/team have done it right. I've been a team owner of th e Roughriders for a dozen years and a season ticket holder for going on 20 years. I am proud to say I am a supporter of this stadium and team. All those from outside the province can say what they want but Saskatchewan has come up with a gem.

CBC forgot to include the REDBLACKS TD Place?

At least they mentioned that Hamilton's was half paid by the Feds. What a joke.

That's because they are hosting the Pan Am Games. IF any Western cities like Winnipeg or Regina or Edmonton or Calgary won the bid to host an international sporting event like that 30% of the funding would come from the feds which could be utilized as they see fit - in this case a portion of the 30% was allocated towards THF.

Winnipeg received 30% of it funding for the 1999 Pan Am Games from the feds. IT's just that since total spending was $180 million instead of the $2 billion being spent for the upcoming 2015 games, there were no permanent sports stadiums built - just refurbishments and temporary ones.

Hamilton is not hosting the Pan Am games. Toronto is. The Hamilton stadium is hosting a 2 week soccer tournament. For that they get 50% Fed funding for their football stadium. It is a political ruse.

As someone who was militantly fond of old Taylor Field, who wanted the historic stadium preserved and renovated and treasured for another 77 years, I nevertheless am thrilled by the space-age design for its replacement. It reminds me of Orbit City Stadium, where the Jetsons watched professional rocketball.I am not among those disappointed that new Mosaic Stadium will be open to the elements. If there was a dome, and if the Riders were playing there for the Grey Cup, and if the Snowbirds did one of those breathtaking, low-level, high-speed flyovers, we wouldn't be able to see them. The stadium is said to be ready for a dome,

however, if the citizens of Regina should decide one day that their taxes aren't high enough.

As it is, most of the grandstands are sheltered under a curvaceous, translucent canopy. I only hope the supporting structure under the canopy allows no space for pigeons to roost. The architects are internationally renowned for their stadium designs. They will have thought of that, won't they? What I like best about the design is something else it doesn't have, namely a running track around the football field. The barren wasteland of a track between the field and the grandstands - at Edmonton's Commonwealth Stadium, for instance, or, sadly, our own Griffiths Stadium - makes the game seem far, far away, like it's in another jurisdiction. This is the opposite of the intimate

Stadium roof will allow warmer, brighter and louder Rider games

BY NATASCIA LYPNY, THE LEADER-POST MAY 28, 2014 7:40 AM

Stadium roof will allow warmer, brighter and louder Rider games

Whereas the current stadium exposes Rider fans to the elements, leaving some bitter like non-adventure-inclined children dragged on a camping trip, the new stadium is carefully designed to mitigate those conditions.
For those saying that the new open-air stadium is going to be just as much of a climatic headache as the current one, think again.

"The roof actually does many, many things to help increase the patron experience," said Mark Williams of HKS Architects, the firm behind the new stadium's design.

Whereas the current stadium exposes Rider fans to the elements, leaving some bitter like non-adventure-inclined children dragged on a camping trip, the new stadium is carefully designed to mitigate those conditions.

A Toronto firm - that Williams describes as employing the foremost experts in the world studying climatic conditions on buildings - modelled the weather's impact on the stadium, using 100 years of data.

The result should be warmer, brighter and louder Rider games.

The roof will be made of a Teflon-coated fabric stretched between sets of steel tresses. The material has been used in buildings around the world, said Williams.

"But this exact shape and configuration grew out of some of the climatic issues that we were dealing with in terms of dealing with the wind and sun and snow loads."

The aerodynamic roof guides wind away from the seating bowl, cutting the impact of gusts by 50 per cent compared with outside the stadium. The current stadium is angled to bear the brunt of the strong northwest winds, said Williams, while this one is oriented to block them.

Yes, it's not fully enclosed, but the stadium's partial roof will cover half of the patrons.

The translucency of the Teflon lets about 25 per cent of the sun's light through, meaning game watchers won't feel like a heavy weight is cowering over them, said Williams.

At the same time, the muted light will serve to lessen light contrasts on the field - something in which fans, broadcasters and photographers alike will rejoice.
