I've flown Toronto-Ottawa twice, and Montreal-Toronto once.

Have to say that flying porter was one of the better decisions I've made. If only I had more reason to visit Toronto, I'd fly down.

Air Canada must be directing passengers from Ottawa to Toronto as my two recent flights to Atlanta were via Toronto. Flights directly into the U.S. were going to be significantly more expensive. In the past, flights via Toronto were more expensive so maybe too many people were looking for alternatives, which has built excess capacity, which is now driving down prices. In retrospect, I think I got a pretty good deal.

That's it, I caved and went to the Airport just to check out the Airbus A330-330 for myself. The aircraft (coming in as Air Canada 452) landed on Runway 25, exited the runway at Runway 32 then exited at taxiway C.

My impression: It's definitely longer and wider than a Boeing 767.

How many people travel from Ottawa to US airports for cheaper fares? I know many go from Toronto to Buffalo for flights to US destinations (which become domestic flights).

I doubt there are actual numbers on this, but I would also be curious to know. Just go to the Syracuse airport and the number of Ontario plates matches that of NY. I've flown out of SYR once - got a flight to Fort Myers, FL for $139 (all in) each way. AC to Fort Lauderdale was about $250 + taxes.
My guess would be about 125,000-250,000 loss to people travelling to US airports like SYR & Watertown from YOW. Probably another 250,000-1,000,000 travel to YUL and YYZ though.

Just to add: Ottawa and Edmonton have similar size populations but YEG had 6.9 million passengers last year where Ottawa had about 4.6 million. If you say we both have similar catchment areas we are losing about ~ 2 million passengers a year to different airports. I realize the economies of the two cities are quite different and people may be more willing to leisurely travel from YEG but still it is quite a wide gap in passenger travel. Ottawa is just the little baby sandwiched in between YYZ & YUL.

The economies of the 2 cities are based on different sectors but their citizens have similar spending powers and habits. I suspect they travel equally. There are 4 basic reasons for the large difference in passenger numbers: A. If Edmontonians have a YYC habit, Ottawans have the same but on speed in respect to YUL, which offers a huge number of flights to Europe and the Middle East. There's no denying it, Montreal's airport can be accessed in just one hour on a good day from downtown Ottawa. B. There's Syracuse airport, which offers much cheaper deals for points in the US; this airport is only about 3.5 hours from Ottawa... This makes the drive acceptable when you are saving $1000 for a family of 4 for flights to Florida. It also lures many of the passengers which are located within the YOW catchment near the border. The closest similar offer for Edmonton would probably be Spokane, which would require a 7 or 8 hour drive... Not worth it. C. Many travellers use YEG to get to the oil sands. They employ many workers on a "month on month off" basis, which means they're off to warmer places the minute they have finished their last shift. No oil patch near Ottawa. D. Finally, Ottawa is not isolated... Edmonton (as well as Calgary) is. Unless traveling to close points within the province, these folks pretty much have to fly... we don't. Many Ottawans and Gatineois or visitors to the region also use the train.

I do A LOT of research before buying my airline tickets and I have been pleasantly surprised in finding cheaper fares departing from Ottawa than anywhere else (and I always check for if I can get lower fares leaving from Toronto, Montreal, Watertown, Syracuse or Ogdensburg. Hopefully this will get more people flying from Ottawa and straight to their destination, instead of driving elsewhere or redirecting everyone through Toronto

It's extremely cheap, around $150 return (less than gas), to fly to Boston on Cape Air from Ogdensburg, and from Boston to everywhere else.

They're going to have it running as often as they can, to train the most amount of pilots and other crew on it.

In other news, runway 32/14 has been closed for resurfacing. We should expect it to be closed all summer long, so runway 25/07 will be used only.

They've used these flight numbers: ACA7087, ACA7088 and ACA7089

I've setup an e-mail alert from Flightaware with this criteria: All flights from CYYZ to CYYZ flying B788. Each time they are going to be doing training, I'll be notified automatically.

Correct they have been flying circuits that begin in YYZ and then perform touch and gos between YOW and YMX (Mirabel). Today's flight number was 7089. Hopefully they will do some evening flying again tonight like they did last night. I believe it's first revenue flight is this weekend YYZ-YHZ so they're almost done practicing/training!

After more than 6 years of absence, Delta will resume Ottawa-Atlanta service beginning Dec. 20.

The schedule is somewhat unusual in that it starts as daily and then reverts to weekly (Saturday) service.
