I noticed long time VFR reference points "The Twin Stacks" (NE of the airport) are coming down now, one tower has been slowly getting removed from the top down.

Those twin stacks have been part of YYC for as long as I can remember. I recall flying in here as a kid with my dad back in the 1970's and the tower using them for directing VFR traffic. It will be strange not having them around anymore.

Wouldn't surprise me, unless it is the straddle for Calgary gas. Alberta has way too many gas plans.

It's a sour gas processing plant run by Nexen and has been in the decommissioning process for a couple years. The stacks are the last bits to go.

Any idea why flight aware showed a KE 737-800 doing YYC-YYZ in the wee hours of the morning at 1245?

MARCH stats

Another great month overall.

http://www.yyc.com/en-us/media/factsfigures/passengerstatistics.aspx

Overall growth of 6.8% and 7.8% YTD.

International growth slowed a bit but still the best month ever.

Also transborder, highest month ever - approaching 300,000 pax.

Second fastest growing major airport in Western Canada for the month... Just a fraction behind YVR.
But fastest growing major airport for YTD... just a fraction ahead of YVR.

On another note... YUL has yet to release any 2014 pax stats.

Westjet just removed these flights from their winter scheds for next winter.

Not sure if that is permanent but they were listed a few weeks ago.

I saw that too, figured it was a Flightaware glitch and nothing more.

It's a bit ironic. My friend lives up in Skyview Ranch and the towers are a piece of the area and ingrained in my mental map. So many new communities build gimmicky 'installations' to create character, fauxhistory or help with wayfinding yet in this area they were blessed with a natural feature that does all of this. Naturally, the feature gets removed.

I hope the developers at least had a word with Nexen.

Wow, 250 000 more pax in the first quarter. It's doubtful the growth rate will continue at such a rate but 15 million looks very promising at this point. 2015 should also provide us with decent numbers (perhaps a little depressed in the early part of the year), what with everything coming online later in the year.

I think I saw that plane a few times from the NE. I thought it was on a weird path, not where planes normally fly as they land, it was more east. Kept circling around a few times.

1st Air Canada 787 expected to be delivered in second week of May

Source: http://nyc787.blogspot.ca/

Quote:
Air Canada is expected to take delivery of its first 787 around May 12th subject to successful completion of all flight testing activities. ZA610 (LN 160, C-GHPQ) flew 3 test flights already though the 1st one had to be cut off 5 minutes after takeoff due to some packing foam left in a duct as well as a leaking door seal. Both issues have been rectified. ZA610 should conduct the 1st customer flight (C-1) on April 30th as an Air Canada crew is already in Everett to prepare for the customer flight(s) and to take the aircraft back to Toronto. Delivery is scheduled for May 12th but the aircraft is to remain at in Everett until May 18th when it will fly away to Toronto. The aircraft will have some special events and well as conduct some flight operations in Toronto but will start flying commercially on May 21st between Toronto and Montreal and Toronto to Zurich after that. It is due to commence its regular run between Toronto and Haneda-Tokyo on July 1st.

Here's a couple recent shots of developments at YYC. The first "new" section of the airport, the ATB Infill, also called "Concourse A Backfill" opens overnight tonight. All pax arriving on Air Canada into concourse A will now go through this new area to get to baggage claim. Although there is not going to a lot of fanfare, this is a pretty significant event i.m.o. It's the first "new" section of the airport to open since D widening and is a good preview of what the IFP is gonna be like in terms of finish & materials. Interesting thing to note is the choice of floor in this area...anyone with a keen eye will know what I'm taking about.

Here's a pic, I'll try to post some more tomorrow.

ATB Infill - Opens overnight tonight.

View of the IFP from Concourse A. Note the removal of Gates 1-8 walkway in progress. This is now a bussing operation.

View of the INT/TB Holdroom. Lot's of scaffolding right now, but when it's all gone she's gonna be a beauty.

Looking at the glass wall b/w A&B (Banff Hall), this whole wall is getting pushed out to make way for a corridor b/w the IFP and B,C & D Gates.

Exciting times for sure.

Ps. I'll try to most more pics more often, but I'm not too sure about the rules, so if these are too big I can post smaller ones going forward, just let me know.

RE: First new section of the terminal. Are you sure that arrival pax will be going through this area. To orient oneself this photo is take on the departure level about where the hotel section is above. The temporary wall leads to AC domestic checkin and ticketting area. While there are escalators to the lower level, a second set of escalators for arrival pax is located on the other side of the far left hand wall. I think that Concourse A pax will exit their concourse onto al short hallway leading to this second escalator. Take the escalator down to arrival doors that open into the public accessible bag hall.

RE: Banff Hall extension. This new hallway goes right through the Air Canada Maple Leaf Lounge. I would love to see the blueprints for where CAA is going to put the domestic MLL.

RE international and transborder retail halls. It will be very interesting to see what the US CBP will have to say about this setup. Other airports have tried to do an open air great room concept only to be told there has to be a physical barrier that would prevent pax from tossing items from one level to the next. EWR terminal B installed netting between the two floors at the behest of US CBP. Other terminals have tried the same approach only to make last minute changes to comply with various government requirements.

Another example is YVR international terminal had some very last minute changes otherwise the US CBP would not allow for the relocation of pre-clearance to the new ITB.

My guess is the CAA will have to install a clear glass barrier that is 8-10 feet tall rather than have open air railing.

Wow - they are going to push that entire glass wall out, instead of just creating a pathway on the outside of the glass? That looks like it will be a massive expense, or perhaps I've not understood what all will be required.
