I'm impressed, but mostly thankful that Cartem's isn't affected.

Reminds me of that canopy on MNP Tower:

Thanks for posting. that looks good! vast improvement over the original scheme.

Hmmmmm… it looks quite handsome.

I like the subtle but striking detail of the 'ripple' facade with the wood inlay. Very nice.

Thanks for this!! Looks great and is going to clean up one of the most cluttered and unsightly corners in the area.

The parkade is ugly but other than that, this corner looks ok. The building that sits there now is actually pretty nice looking. Maybe they can retain the facade. The last thing downtown needs is another glass tower along with some more sterile glass retail.

That hotel is such a POS. Hopefully something spectacular will be erected in its place.
I am especially excited by the prospect because it was bought by starwood. Hopefully they will completely rebuild and maybe finally give Vancouver a W or something of that nature!

Westin is owned by Starwood. They could very well keep it a westin. And it's hardly a peice of shit.

The location would be great for a landmark building. I doubt they will demolish the existing building, but does anyone know how tall tower this site would allow?

The existing building isn't that horrinble either. A well-kept product of its era.

The Bayshore Gardens CD-1 Zoning Bylaw (revised 1999) allows 2 new hotel towers of 16 and 18 storeys.
These are towers K and L on this diagram.

The Westin Building is quite attractive, in my opinion. Plus it has some historical significance -- the eccentric Howard Hughes lived on the top floor for quite a while.

I've always liked the original buildings, perhaps a redevelopment would re-introduce Trader Vic's as the chain seems to be on the rebound.

Huh? It looks like more effort went into making that parkade blend in with the older buildings than any other above ground parking structure downtown.

I'm surprised the owner of the Cartem's building held out. Now they're stuck wiht it until somebody redevelops the parkade.

I trust that would bring some more life back into the area. I wasn't around when when Trader Vic's was there, but am told that it was a very popular spot, especially on weekends.

My wife used to work at Westin Bayshore and they said rebuilding is not very likely because they'd be forced to move it far back from the shore due to modern rules on ocean setbacks etc.
