I have to agree. I live within a block of this building, and I think it's pretty disappointing. I am no fan of WEN or any of the other groups/individuals who fought to stop this - the West End is not a museum, and we definitely need new developments - but not like this.
The exterior finishes are really cheap, and the combination of square, round, and angled balconies make it look like it was designed by committee and they just mashed everyone's ideas together.
What you can't see from these photos are the two worst features:
1. They've used alternating white and dark frames/mullions for the windows on the sides and back. The dark ones, while they look black in the photos, are actually dark brown. So they have a combination of black, grey, and red spandrel on the front... but chose brown for the windows?
2. One entire column of windows on the west side - from the first floor to the top floor - has NO GLASS. The entire window on every floor is a GIANT spandrel panel. I'll try to take a photo later today. It's pretty brutal.
I dread the balcony railings. God only knows what those will look like.
[Edit: Adding a photo of the "bad" side of the building, which I took this afternoon. The entire column of windows directly to the left of the balconies has no glass. I'm not sure I understand why they even bothered forming windows in that location. Could a blank wall really have looked any worse?]
