An iconic “transit plaza” is proposed for the existing SkyTrain station with an “iconic roof” with bus stops, shops and services and a “bike centre.”
Hmm.. well perhaps if we're lucky, we'll eventually see the current mismatch of roofs go away with this.

Sounds like it - given that the map shows roads through what is now the mall.

now, what i am wondering is, why aren't they using the original roof plans? since they obviously have the plans and roughed in foundations. it seems like a big waste to not use them and have everything mismatched, really looking like it is a decade late.

there must be a reason for them to completely ignore the original ideas/plans.

When in doubt, follow the money.

Bombardier's submission would have continued the existing canopy design, but they didn't win the bid.

SNC-Lavalin has refined corruption down to an art, so what can you do.

Some photos of the aforementioned roof, taken by me yesterday:

Also looks like good progress on the west concourse level:

I was not aware Bombardier was actually bidding. Weren't they just a minor contractor for one of the bidders?

And if I recall, SNC-Lavalin built the Millenium Line anyway, so it would have made sense that they simply continue on...for consistency sake.

As for the Lougheed roof, again, why spend so much money on aesthetics? I'd rather they spend it on other things to expand transit, or even improve some of the background systems for Evergreen Line.

Given the inflationary cost and changes in some scope of the project, you need every single penny saved. After all, EGRT must also have contengency funds for unforseen incidents like what happened above Como Lake.

And above all, changing the design of the Lougheed Roof from the original, BC NDP run proposal, is for sure a political move as well. If they continues with the original roof, it would show the BC Liberals are essentially continuing a BC NDP legacy.

So they seem to be trying to distance themselves from that, and with the likely rebranding of the existing Millenium Line from Lougheed and beyond, it will only push the BC NDP legacy out of the mindsets of voters in the long run.

Provided that it isn't a corrugated metal roof I think this should be fine. The primary roof is such an architectural statement that I think a secondary roofline that makes no attempt to draw attention from the first will suffice. My hunch is that it will be a wood panel roof similar to the Richmond stations on the Canada Line, or also possibly a bus shelter-like glass roof. I'm not knowledgeable enough about construction and steel work to guess what it will be based on has been erected so far. I'll be fine with just about anything except a corrugated metal roof with those ugly threaded fasteners jutting through at random and catching cobwebs and dirt like a half-completed shed.

Out of curiosity, will doors on both sides of the train open simultaneously at this station? It would be the first implementation of the Spanish Solution in Metro Vancouver, beating Commercial Broadway's upgrades by several years.

No, keep in mind there are three sets of tracks in an island/pocket platform configuration as opposed to a dual island platform configuration (which is what I would have hoped) rendering this not possible.

The render seems to show a glass roof on the 3rd platform.

In fact, it'll be better than some stations like Gilmore, which has a particle board ("Timberstrand") roof
(intended to be easily replaced when the surrounding site is redeveloped and the station integrated)

Quote:
Description Gilmore Skytrain Station:

Using 8 foot by 16 foot sheets of Timberstrand, 64 arched roof panels were created for the Gilmore Skytrain Station in Burnaby, BC. Having constructed an adjustable prototype panel for testing purposes, we were able to confidently produce the remainder using a multiple component cast kingpost and fixed-length stainless steel cables. The 8,200 square foot roof was erected in 4 days.

Ok, your post makes no sense AT ALL. Do not give me the penny pinching argument for other projects when the fact is stations like Main are getting beautiful expensive Millennium Line grade renos. ALOT of money is being spent on the aesthetics of the Main St reno, are you not aware that renos are more expensive than new construction? It baffles me that we are rebuilding Main St to a Millennium Line class station, when just the third platform at Lougheed station isn't when we have the chance to do it right the first time as new construction. The third platform is being completed well below the standards of the Main St reno and that's what irritates me. If they competed it as per the original plans, the station would have been the same level as Main St. Don't give me the whole NDP vs Liberal thing cause, after all the third platform itself was built by the NDP and the public is too stupid to associate this roof or that roof to either political party.

The Bombardier bid was EL Partners and that included the original architectural firm that designed Lougheed Station. You can bet the farm that they would have completed Lougheed Station as per THEIR original plans.

I'm sort of hoping that the absence of steel columns at the [former] middle tower foundation support
means that there will be some sort of feature art installation or element at that location.
The old render shows that that support is centred on the platform, so it would be a focal point
(i.e. a native welcoming figure or thunderbird, etc.) when approaching the station from the mall.

Let it go finalcoolman. EL Partners participated in the bid and lost. There is a reason for it, clearly aesthetics is not a priority for the Provincial government who is running the show.

The rebuilding of the Main St station is baffling for sure, I grant you that. But it is a Translink initiative, and a controversial one at that since it was pushed by their own board members with little input from anyone else. Ultimately, its just to make the passengers a little bit more comfortable and upgrade its look. But at the end of the day, it wasn't necessary and we all know how Translink loves to waste money on things unnecessary.

That said, there is absolutely nothing wrong with the Evergreen Line / Lougheed station platform the way it is now. It will serve its function well, and that is what needs to happen first and foremost. Aesthetics is not required....and tbh, the mere existence of the Evergreen Line itself more than makes up bringing improved aesthetics in the area.

Honestly, I drive an old Toyota Sienna (normally) that's seen better days on the outside and get to see all these nice cars all around from my minivan that at least keeps me comfy and gets me to where I need to go, it's those drivers in their Lexuses and AMGs who have to deal with the eyesore that's my minivan.

Same thing here, the Coquitlam bound passengers get to look at the nice original Lougheed Station while the Vancouver bound passengers have to look at... that...

Was Gilmore's roof not meant to be temporary, and replaced (or incorporated) into a building design for the site? I thought I read that once.

Plus, the original station will be ad-free; the new platform will have 26 advertisement panels...
