Hello, been a longtime follower of this site, and have to say it is very informative!

Was out for a walk at lunch today downtown and noticed some activity a DCondo site. Excavation and a few worker mulling around. Looks to me to be Hydro/gas lines or something like that.

That's it. While I don't know a lot about drilling rigs, this one is not a directional boring machine like you see all over but rather one with a vertical derrick. Most of the time rigs this size are truck-mounted but this one was stand-alone.

Don't get to excited... Manitoba Hydro is building a new substation on that property. This is just the geotechnical investigation. There are hydro workers on the site with the drill rig. If you look on MERX now there is a RFP for the design of the wall:

Hopefully it is prettier than the burrows street substation.

Calvary temple still wants parking so we may see a "new" parking lot spring up somewhere in the area.

Interesting how this substation is coming in under the radar, as far as I can see it is not in the Manitoba Hydro Consolidated Capital Expenditure Forecast that is filed with the PUB for the years 2012 - 2032.

I believe that it is either a replacement for the King St station or an addition to capacity to replace the one that was proposed to go in a heritage building in the exchange.

The only new one that is budged for that area is on William Ave next to the Health Sciences new powerhouse on land Hydro already owns. That was suppose to be part of the upgrade of electrical service to the HSC complex.

The other thing I am surprised at is that they want to build a traditional substation. Manitoba Hydro has been putting in a lot of the Distribution Supply Centers instead of substations.

These are basically pad mount transformers and other control units which perform the same as a traditional substation but don't have the look of a substation with the overhead steel distribution poles and beams.

They are putting 4 or 5 of them in the Bridgewater Forest development instead of a regional substation, replaced the traditional substation by the UofM off Pembina Hwy with one as well as other numerous locations in the rest of Manitoba.

The Burrows look is the model for the new Martin Ave substation and I believe was shown as the look for the new St. James station on Madison off of Ellice.

Hydro according to their 2012 annual report sank the Burrows substation yard in the ground in an attempt to reduce the visibility of the station equipment to the surrounding community.

Awesome, thanks tv. I really hope it ends up being stellar whatever it is. Though, if it now will have a better chance of development then fantastic. That is one lot that needs something on it.

This is a replacement for the King St Station. A few years back Hydro had plans to gut a block of Exchange heritage buildings for a new station that met a huge opposition. This is the solution that was found. I feel that it is a good compromise to what could have been a disaster for the exchange.

The substation planned for HSC has been delayed for a few years as they have found an interim solution for the area needs.

The new Burrows substation still gets fed from Rover Terminal, new duct line was run down Sutherland Ave to feed it, This station replaces two obsolete substations: Alfred Station (next to Burrows station) and Charles Station (behind Cropo Funeral Home).

These two stations were identified as being obsolete when Manitoba Hydro did its due diligence investigation before buying Winnipeg Hydro.

Probably two of the reasons Winnipeg Hydro was sold as there is a lot of money needed to fix up the old Winnipeg Hydro system to modern standards.

Even the Rover terminal is getting the 100 year old supply lines replaced from just outside Birds Hill through North/East Kildonan / Elmwood.

Gone will be the ugly two sets of steel towers replaced with a single wood pole transmission line.

Looks like the Reenders extension will not be completed until next summer, by end of 2015 construction season. Was to be completed this summer. And I also assume the closing of Almey at Lag, which was to take effect January 1, 2015, will be delayed until 2016. The new Transcona Blvd (Kildare west extension) will be completed this summer.
