So who's the "source"? Paul's hunch?

No denying there's a problem. But there wasn't that much snow on the roof. Maybe the upper deck was full of snow? Either way, I couldn't see there being millions in damages. And the fact the Wade isn't letting the Sun into see the problems is no issue. Why would he?

Sounds like it could be related to the lack of volume for draining water from melting/rain in the upper deck. I did see that first hand last year as the water drains to the front row of the upper deck and seemed to collect there and not have a path to quickly move away from that point.

Maybe because it's a publically funded stadium. Him denying the media access only increases speculation that it's worse than he is letting on. IMO Miller has no right denying anyone access, remember the Bombers are merely non-paying renters thus far.

Yawwnnn..Sorry I get sleepy reading the Sun, Winnipeg's version of the National Enquirer.
Let's wait for a credible journalist to weigh in and hopefully we can eventually move this to another thread, Winnipeg Blue Bombers, maybe even the stadium construction thread.(page 2 on SSP), Is their a thread relating to Regina's Stadium? I'm sure it will be resolved.

I heard it was the worst winter in the Peg since 1898? ..Sorry non-construction thread related. Carry on..

Migs, Paul Friesen works for the Sun for starters which sometimes is kind of tabloid-ish and he's one of the more dramatic writers there.

"publically funded" doesn't mean much other than where the money came from. I can't walk into the Premiers' or Prime Ministers' office, any crown corporation or civic building when I want to and neither can the media.

So. The Manitoba Legislature is a publicly funded facility, same with Saskatchewan's. So you have the right to march in and sit down with the premier? Good luck with that.

I work for the government (theoretically). My house is then government funded. You can come sit down and watch the game with me?

Just because it's publically funded doesn't mean you have free reign to the facility. What about all the concert halls, play houses that are publically funded. Schools, hospitals? I could go on.

Edit: Pegcity beat me to it!

doing some research for a conference presentation i have to do....compiled some interesting numbers:

since 2005 there has been 35 multi-family residential projects completed in downtown Winnipeg. 22 (2/3) of those were in the Exchange District. 17 (1/2+) were heritage building conversions. 1400 new units have been added in downtown. 800 of those units are in the Exchange District. 18 residential projects are proposed or under construction currently in downtown. 11 of the 18 are in the Exchange District.

also: when glasshouse and D condo start construction (both imminent) there will be almost 900 units under construction in downtown, which will add another 1500 people to the downtown population.

when those units are complete, Winnipeg will have added the equivalent of 19, 15-storey residential towers to downtown since 2005.

This puts a smile on my face. Thanks for the research going into this projection.

2) Would there still be something potentially grand in ambition still go up? I feel like that lot is a prime location for a big development. I am also hopeful for bringing more residential mass to that area, so if condos or apartments could be part of that, that would be great.

3) Is there an "ideal" development for that lot? Or is just at a point where "anything will be fine"
I heard the tower was a 15 storey hotel when it finally died...anything else would be up to the new developer....a high end hotel is being shopped so it would have to be something less than terrible.

i definitely think selling the property to a more active developer would help.

at this point i'm happy with anything to be honest....a hotel would be perfect in my opinion.

I never realized there was such a dramatic decrease in the downtown population from 1941 to 1966. I would have thought that decrease would have taken place in the 70s and 80s.

So we have had an increase of 5,000 from 1986 to 2014, an increase of 45% over 28 years. Growth has increased substantially the last 8 years - 2600 for a 20% increase. Very encouraging!

my guess is the decrease happened when the area between portage and broadway stopped being a single family residential neighbourhood and was replaced with modernist buildings and parking lots.....it was lower density but it was a neighbourhood that completely vanished.....there was probably a rebound from that of a few thousand people in the early 70's when all the apartment buildings in south broadway (and some north of broadway) were constructed.
