Agreed. But I DO think that jokes like this are symptomatic of a deeper issue regarding the visceral national image of Philly as--in effect--a burnt-out old city full of little more than abandoned buildings with broken windows (similar to Detroit's image). Humor like this works because there's an element of perceived truth in it that resonates with the audience, and I just can't imagine a similarly themed joke being made about, e.g., NYC, Boston, Chicago, etc. In most people's minds, those cities aren't DEFINED by the urban blight that they each contain, as much as Philly is so defined in its national public image. This is something that needs to be acknowledged and actively changed if Philly is to continue its current momentum to becoming a true national and international destination city, in my opinion. And when you think about it, SNL's predominant audience demo is most likely younger urban types, with a generally favorable image of big cities and urban living, so the fact that Philly is the butt of this kind of joke is telling. I remember another Philly joke on Weekend Update a year or two ago, when Seth Meyers was still there, with a punch line questioning why anyone would possibly want to visit Philadelphia--again, resonating because of an overall national image problem that needs to be fixed.

Not to blow this out of proportion (too late for that, right? ), but it IS indicative of a larger image problem that Philly still needs to overcome, it seems to me.

That's fair...but they absolutely do make jokes about other major cities, too. Their job is to make joke, and most people do understand that this is humor, and that all cities have their "dark sides." This is a reality of all urban environments.

Agreed (again ). But nobody jokes about NYC, Boston, Chicago, etc. as consisting mainly of decaying and abandoned old buildings full of broken windows. Those jokes are reserved for the likes of Philly, Detroit, etc., as are the jokes about being a boring or undesirable place to visit or live (which, as I said, was the theme of a joke about Philly on Weekend Update a year or two ago).

Again, these kinds of jokes apparently resonate with the SNL writers and audience because of the national image Philly still seems to have.

It apparently doesn't stop Brooklynites from moving to Philadelphia, so, whatev.

As an ex-Brooklynite, myself (for a few years), I can tell you that it's going to take a lot more than them (and there aren't that many of them moving to Philly, the occasional news article about it notwithstanding ). Besides, they're urban pioneers by definition--or at least they used to be before living in Brooklyn became so hip (i.e., back in my time there).

Oh I know, I was just being dismissively flippant on purpose. It's my thing.

I do now. I forgot about this. I am a bad person. I'll set a reminder for myself for tomorrow.

We'll probably start seeing activity in May. Construction is supposed to start in June.

I have a volunteering gig Thursday nights on the 36th floor of 1601 Market. We just wraped up this year, but start up again late fall so I'm looking forward to seeing the progress from that angle. It's pretty much perfect.

The Comcast Innovation & Technology Center is clear for take off!

This tower soared through the Civic Design Review committee, and has full approvals from city council. The only thing left is to start pulling permits.

Construction is set to begin this summer. The tower could begin as early as June.

Awesome!

So now we have 3 cities outside NY building 300+ meter buildings (LA, SF and Philly)

Hopefully Miami, Seattle and Chicago will soon follow.

Chicago has at least 6 buildings at or above 300+ meters.

No, CITC will be Philly's first 300+ meter building. Outside of NYC & Chicago, the existing (or definite) 300+ meter US city tallies, in order of city's tallest building, currently are:

Philly 1 (once CITC is completed)
LA 2 (once Wilshire Grand is completed)
SF 1 (once Transbay is completed)
Atlanta 1
Houston 2

In terms of 900-footers:

Philly 3 (once CITC is completed)
LA 2 (once Wilshire Grand is completed)
SF 1 (once Transbay is completed)
Atlanta 1
Houston 3
Cleveland 1
Seattle 1
Dallas 1

Miami will most likely join these lists sooner rather than later - and possibly gain the most towers above 300m (984') and 900' (274m) - but I didn't include any of their proposals (or any additional SF proposals) because I'm not aware of any of them being definites for construction. But I'm not following those cities very closely, so someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

Chicago has several buildings over 300 meters! Miami's won't be built anytime soon. Still at least two years out until any get serious. Seattle's is just a fantasy proposal from a developer who is probably looking to up-zone the parcel and then sell the property with zoning approvals

To clarify, Zapatan was only counting under-construction buildings, not existing ones.
