While I don't think it's an amazing piece of architecture, for a dome stadium that's 25 years old - I think it's pretty decent. When the roof is opened, it feels intimate while still looking "big". If they did some exterior work to cover up the concrete with a brick facade, and once the real grass is in - it'll look much better. I think the knock on it was mostly when the roof is closed and when it's set up for football. Sure, it will never be Camden Yards - but at least it's not the Big O in Montreal.

3-4 months to completion and I'm still seeing structural steel and concrete... definitely don't think the beer taps will be flowing, at the very least.

Tough to gauge but I got the sense that the large majority were Montrealers. It was a pretty awesome experience, especially since I scored free box seats

Flooding fix at Investors Group Field won’t come cheap
Paul Friesen Winnipeg Sun April 08, 2014

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers have discovered another flaw in the design of the city’s new stadium, and the fix won’t come cheap.

The Winnipeg Sun has learned of significant flooding at Investors Group Field, caused by a lack of drainage to handle the spring melt.

A source who saw the problem first-hand but spoke only on the condition of anonymity said roughly one-third of the suites have been affected, to the tune of hundreds of thousands of dollars in damages.

“And then there will be the cost of the permanent fix,” the source said, describing a scene of collapsed ceilings, soaked carpets, even a bucket catching water in the middle of the visitors locker-room.

One problem, the source said, is water from melting snow falls down from the stadium’s roof into the seating area, where it flows back towards the suites, instead of away from them.

“There’s no drainage - it’s sitting at the doors and leaking through.”

The water has also spilled out of the suites and into adjoining hallways, the source said.

Blue Bombers president/CEO Wade Miller acknowledged a water issue, but downplayed the extent of it.

“There’s a little water from a spring thaw,” Miller said. “We’re working with the builder and the designer to deal with it.”

Miller confirmed the water is leaking from the 200 level of seating, but said just “a few” suites on each side have been affected. He claimed no knowledge of an issue with the visitors locker room.

However, he refused the Sun’s request to have access to the publicly funded facility to view the damage.

“You’re not getting in there to have a look at it,” Miller insisted. “The stadium is closed.”

Miller said the Bombers will pursue the facility’s builder and/or designer to cover the costs of the repairs and any redesign that might be necessary.

The source says the Bombers would be wise to acknowledge the seriousness of the issue publicly.

“It’s not minor,” the source said. “You’d think they would have learned from past mistakes. Because everything they’ve tried to hide has come out eventually and made them look bad.”

In a statement Tuesday afternoon, BBB Stadium chair Andrew Konowalchuk said: "Due to the spring thaw, Investors Group Field has sustained water damage in the Suites and Visitors Locker Room. This has been an ongoing issue with the facility; the designer and building contractor are aware of the matter and are in the process of remediation, and identifying solutions to avoid future damage.

"This will not impact any events scheduled at Investors Group Field, specifically the Canada vs. USA women's soccer match on May 8th, 2014."

Originally pegged to cost a guaranteed $190 million, the stadium has been plagued by delays and design issues, from a lack of access to the field for concerts to a press box open to the elements, making the facility unsuitable to host a Grey Cup without a significant renovation.

Those changes have added millions of dollars to the original cost.

Just two weeks ago, the province announced an additional $3 million in funding to make the stadium more usable in the winter, driving the total cost close to $210 million.

Ottawa RedBlacks are the hottest ticket in town
Tim Baines, Ottawa Sun April 04, 2014

Smack dab in the middle of Hockey Country, in the midst of a wickedly cold and snowy winter, the RedBlacks are proving that there is a huge appetite for football in the Ottawa area.

With more than three months until their first home game at TD Place -- part of the magnificently spruced-up Lansdowne Park project -- the RedBlacks have already sold more than 14,000 season tickets.

"Fourteen thousand is another great milestone and in my mind, there are so many milestones ahead," said OSEG president of sports Jeff Hunt. "We continue to get tremendous traction and interest. It's really amazing.

"When you think about it, we're trying to sell football tickets in the height of hockey season -- in unseasonably bad weather. So you'd think we'd be a long way from people's minds. When we've seen nicer weather, we've seen a spike in activities.

"We're ahead of where we thought we'd be. I had been saying we hoped for 15,000 season tickets as a stretch goal. But 12,000 was kind of what we thought we might be happy with. I have a feeling 15,000 is in our not-too-distant future. And it makes me wonder how far we can go."

Sales of three-game mini packs have also been brisk. For as little as $69, you can get the mini pack, which includes a ticket to the July 18 home-opener (against the Toronto Argos) and two additional games. The team won't start selling single-game tickets until late June or early July.

On the football side, the RedBlacks will hold a two-day mini camp in Richmond, Va. Wednesday and Thursday. They will begin training camp May 31 at Carleton University.

Look for the team uniforms to be introduced sometime around May 10.

The team unveiled its stadium food menu Monday, announcing a partnership with Levy Restaurants -- and fans are in for a treat.

It starts with the Create Your Own Caesar cart. Food items include the RedBlacks Dog -- a premium hot dog topped with 14-hour smoked brisket, pulled pork sliders, garlic parmesan fries, a barbecued rib and duck wing combo platter and lobster mac and cheese. There's a heavy slant on local ingredients, including St-Albert grilled cheese.

"We want to have our concessions as something people will talk about in a positive way," said Hunt. "There's an association with stadium pricing that people look at as a bit of a negative. We're hoping we can change that. It's never going to be street prices. But we want concessions to be something people put in the asset column."

Things are coming along together nicely at the stadium. The wooden veil structure will soon be completed.

"Some stuff, you don't really notice, but the veil catches the eye. It's dramatic," said Hunt. "When I see people, the first question they ask is, 'How's the stadium coming along? I just say, 'It's great. We're on time.' For a year and a half, it's been the same boring answer."

It seems like so long ago that the nuisance that was the Friends of Lansdowne delayed construction of the stadium development -- and the return of Ottawa to the CFL. Seems like smooth sailing now.

"Knock on wood, but I'm delighted with the way things are going," said Hunt. "I'm overwhelmed by the reaction to the team. There's a real buzz in town. The Senators are still playing and people are talking about football."

Its a multipurpose stadium and it does that job okay, but IMO its better to do one thing great than to merely do a satisfactory job of multiple things.

I have to say, though, after going to the Big Owe for the preseason games I appreciate the Dome a lot more.
My point is that most of the 90s-00s baseball stadiums are just as sterile and devoid of character, just a different design than the concrete domes and cookie cutters of the 60s, 70s and 80s. Much like a Nickelback album, 15 versions of the same formulaic — with different verses.

SkyDome is actually one of the originals among the bunch, an interesting chunk of concrete in a sea of red bricks trying to look like old warehouses from the exterior.

You would think the design team would of figured that out with the roof + heavy snow + unforgiving angles, would equal floods. Winnipeg gets major snow packs and flooding once every 5-7-years it seems, this should of been taken into account in the design with proper drainage installed from the get go.

would the problem not have arisen last winter as well. the majority of the structure was in place. why didn't they notice this last winter/spring when the stadium was still under construction and possibly easier to fix
