Not sure if it has been mentioned, but the existing heritage building seems to be completely vacated. Now they can do contruction without needing to worry about the noise or disturbance to businesses.

Drove past on Saturday night and the facade of the small retail building on the site (Murchies, etc.) was half gone.

Demolition of the small buildings next door has certainly commenced and is progressing fast. Inside the heritage building they have also been removing all wall surfaces. Seems like it will be a complete renovation inside.

... that it is! About the design ... hmmm, dunno, but it will set a precedent for mass and presence that might inspire other, if not similar, then, complimentary projects and accompanying designs.
There is a building directly opposite on Howe that is rather elegant and might be adapted to a new extension or massing of some sort, coherent with its design (though it seems rather 'complete' as is, with sharply defined corners).
(Imagine what could have been done with the Birks Building ....)

I just like the fact that it's a big, hulking office tower, something we haven't gotten in a while. It just feels really heavy which I like. And I think it will fit in with the area fine because it's not really flashy or anything, it's just big.

I use to work in the Old Stock Exchange.

I am curious, will they be retaining a substantial structural portion of the original building or will it simply be the south and east facades retained?

That definitely adds to the interest of this project. I am really excited to see this one go ahead, it has such a cool "modern" gothic look to me.

I notice that there is a smallish building with three largish arches (in blue) right behind this new building.
Will this stay as is, being such a small parcel of land?
Or is it possible to put quality infill (on what scale I have no idea) there?

It's 52' wide, same as the building immediately to the west of it. Some sort of infill would definitely be possible, but unlikely anything even half the scale of 475 Howe.

I never expected anything on that scale! I was wondering what they'll do with it. It seems so wasted (and ugly).

I would expect the two sites to the west to be combined and redeveloped.
