The latest rumour I've heard on the future second Costco location is that it's going to be in Rosewood, and not the development by Wilson's. Apparently it came from someone who deals with permits for the city, but I can't confirm that. Anyone else heard similar rumblings or rumblings that shoot that down?

My friend's cousin is a representative for Costco sent for a location determination trip. They were to be here for a week, but after two days they had apparently decided on the new McCormind Location and spent the rest of the week exploring the city. So I would say, hearing that, that it will be by the Wilson's greenhouse.

It does strike me that we are building A LOT Of bridges here. Istanbul is at least 50 times the size of Saskatoon and they only have two major bridges. Albeit the traffic in Istanbul is not great, but we are really going over the top here with bridges. Twinning the University Bridge seems completely excessive. Better to use that money invest in the community - arts facilities, a new public library, etc.

Something tells me that this place is destined to become a Saskatoon institution!
Very cool

True, also Istanbul has a substantially better metro system. BRT and Subway.

I take it you are exaggerating to try to make a point? Those 2 bridges span over a kilometer of the Bosphorus Strait which and are two of the longest suspension bridges in the world and join Asia with Europe. Crossings of the strait also include hundreds of ferries. And of course there are hundreds of other bridges over water in Istanbul. Including a 3rd bridge over the strait under construction.

I wasn't trying to fire shots though, I respect Temperance's comments, just not sure where he really stands about more bridges in Saskatoon. I kind of agree that another bridge to College Dr. won't really ease congestion, lots more could be done before spending that kind of money. But strategic river crossings are needed here, particularly one that would ease traffic in the NE part of the city.

It just all seems over the top. And yes I was referring to the two bridges over the Bosphorus, the major waterway in Istanbul, its South Saskatchewan, if you will . And the ferries are passenger, not car ferries, as far as I know. So really no exaggeration intended. I know those bridges are much bigger (I happened to run across one of them recently) but still the principle is the same - a waterway dividing a city - and I find it hard to believe that Saskatoon really needs the eight or even nine bridges that are now proposed (including the existing bridges, the Victoria Bridge, the Parkway bridge, and the bypass bridge(s) - not including a twinned university bridge). There is more to this city than just roads and suburbs, or at least there ought to be. I'm just putting it out there. These bridges are not free and I'm wondering if this is the best place to invest our money.

That Shangri-La is shocking, especially so for a great location that also involved knocking down a great heritage property.

I agree with you as well Temperance. Just thinking of the Parkway "commuter" river crossing bridging a residential area with an industrial area. And plans for Perimeter road parallel to it (I can't imagine living in the narrow corridor between the two and the level of traffic/noise in that area).
Maybe a bridge between Lenore Dr and Central Ave being more appropriate for smaller commuter traffic.

Does anyone think that some of the bridges in Saskatoon could be retrofitted for more lanes? College drive isn't getting any wider, does University bridge need to be doubled?

for example like Centre street bridge in Calgary with a top deck and a smaller lower deck
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Centre-Street-Bridge-Szmurlo.jpg

University bridge adding a fifth lane alternating in the day according to demand for direction of traffic..like how Lions gate bridge does it.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Lions_Gate.jpg

..Also have University bridge pedestrian traffic taken below the main upper deck like how Circle drive bridges do it.

I also agree Istanbul is not a fair comparison to Saskatoon. I have also been there and it is a fascinating city. The crossing of the Bosphorus Strait is quite removed from the downtown core. I don't know how much commuter traffic goes across those bridges with all the commuter ferries etc. They are toll bridges are they not?

If Istanbul was used as a comparison sticking to the European side, there are countless small bridges that cross the river that runs through the downtown core. One even caries a tram line. It is a slightly better comparison.

The college quarter plan has been revised. I had great difficulty finding a proper rendering so I had to resort to a magnifying glass (that makes me sound older than I actually am). An any rate the main point is that they have reduced the greenspace and the potential institutional buildings and put in more mixed use (presumably to fund the rest). They have made a lot of changes to the northeast quadrant in particular.

They are soliciting opinions on a new Recreation Plan for the Quarter. You can find an article and the survey here: http://vvcasaskatoon.com/events/u-of-s-college-quarter-recreation-plan/

This might not be the right place to ask but since some of you guys seem to be in the know about developments in Saskatoon, I figure it's worth a shot. Does anyone know why Saskatoon doesn't have an IMAX theatre, particularly now that the Galaxy is being expanded? Smaller cities like St. John's has one so it cannot be due to the city's size. I saw Captain America at one in Taipei and the AVX theatres Cineplex tries to pull off as their top tier theatres in Saskatoon simply cannot compare.

From what I can recall Regina got one because it came as part of the science center. Maybe its too close to regina with not enough population? Maybe they will put one in the next movie theater they build? Just speculating about most of this. Also I wish Saskatoon had a science center. I love science.

They are two different types of IMAX. Most of the science centres have the "real" IMAX with the 70mm film.

Most of the move houses have a scaled back digital IMAX.

What would be a neat addition to Saskatoon (however it likely will not happen any time soon) if if who ever moves into the old Mendel builds an OmniMAX.

Back about 15 years ago I know a guy that was trying to put a group together to set up an IMAX in Saskatoon. After they looked into it, the chances of making any money were very slim. Aside from the large set-up cost he said the on going royalties fees and contract arrangements were an atrocious cost......... they dropped the plan.

After waiting 3 lights this morning at Airport drive with Semi's and traffic backed up onto the freeway, I think it is time for an overpass at Airport Drive.

This will aleviate traffic throughout circle drive, and there should be a way for Semi traffic to flow through the City as I am sure much of it does.

They should also probably get rid of access to Circle Drive at Clancy Drive, and eventually Laurier.

I think this is needed most of all in the City.

Step one is put a merge lane in from Airport Drive onto Circle Drive. There is no way a freeway should have a simple yield sign on ramp with 20 Feet to merge. It's just ridiculous.

If that was the case 15 years ago I wonder what the chances would be today. The city and surrounding area is much larger, so it might be more realistic if someone were to look into it.
