Wow. That is some serious growth in a short period of time.

In 20 years or so, when the two cities begin to merge geographically into one continuous urban landscape, the only question remaining will be what to call the new city: Wartensville or Marman.

Pending discussions Monday, the Optimist Club of Saskatoon looks to move ahead with its plans for a snow-tube, snowboard park and winter activity centre at Diefenbaker Park.

“This is our first step of many steps moving forward so now we’ll go and complete our business plan they’re asking for to make sure the project is viable based on the activities at the location and all the activities we wish to bring to the hill,” Robert Letts with the Optimist Club of Saskatoon said at the planning and operations committee at city hall.

Tuesday the committee agreed to send a request to city council to designate Diefenbaker Hill as the site for the Optimist Club’s winter recreation facility.

Letts came to city council back in November to pitch his idea for a winter tubing and snowboard park.

Since then they’ve been active in the community gauging interest and finding potential corporate sponsors for the project to help fund it. Currently Letts and his group are collecting data from a survey they conducted in the City of Saskatoon.

“We had an overwhelming 96 per cent positive response from the citizens of Saskatoon, they want to see this in Saskatoon so we’re very excited by those results,” Letts said.

Beyond what they’re calling phase one of the project, which consist of a tubing track, a magic carpet lift, a snowboard park and a 3,000-square-foot chalet, Letts also eluded to a second phase in the project that would potentially bring more activities to Diefenbaker park.

Last semi-official population figure that I heard for Warman was slightly over 8,000. As I recall, that was at the official "becoming a city" ceremony held in the fall of 2012. I'd be surprised if we added another 2,000 in 18 months, but there's no doubt it is a very fast growing community. True, though, that Warman's development is more heavily weighted to residential vs. commercial when compared to Martensville.

One of the original proposals for the name of Martensville was Transylvania.

I think the choice for a future name would be clear.

I'm surprised Martensville has even grown at all since the last census. It seems like all of the new developments have been half full for a few years now.

Saskatoon city planners happy with perimeter highway review
Ministry of highways undertaking review after record growth rates in Saskatoon region

Premier Brad Wall’s promise for a priority on a perimeter highway for Saskatoon isn’t coming to light any time soon.

Currently the Ministry of Highways is going through a thorough validation study for the perimeter highway, and the proposed alignment sketched in 2000 and then confirmed in 2007.

“There's been a significant amount of growth in Saskatoon and the surrounding areas since then so what we're doing is working with the city, and stakeholders to look at the 2007 alignment to see if it’s appropriate,” Doug Wakabayashi, spokesperson for the Ministry of Highways, said.

The highway needs realignment, as many newer developments in Saskatoon are already butting heads with the current alignment.

“The city has grown up to it and it's no longer a perimeter, parts of the highway are now inside city limits so as a perimeter highway it doesn't meet the initial function,” Alan Wallace, director of planning and development with the City of Saskatoon, said.

“So we want highways to select a new route and find an appropriate route.”

The City of Saskatoon has already lobbied for changes to the proposed route in the city’s southeast corner. City planners are looking to amend the Rosewood concept plan to add in another 152 acres to the neighbourhood and about 1,200 more people.

What's wrong with having parts of the city on the other side of the highway? That will always happen. Parts of Calgary's Northwest and South are beyond Stoney.

That would mean building a bridge (interchange) to make travel safer... OR the Saskatchewan alternative (a set of traffic lights) Which BTW should be installed at Wanuskewin and Hwy 11 in the interim, before the Saskatoon Bypass (which is a ways off)

The current perimeter highway alignment would be approximately the same distance from the downtown as the Anthony Henday in Edmonton is from their downtown. I don't think you want to push it much further out.

In my opinion if you could go back thirty years the plan should have been to have it closer in so both city traffic as well as traffic bypassing the city would use it.

As a city grows there will be neighbourhoods on the other side of the highway just like Edmonton and Calgary. What makes that a bad thing. Better to have traffic on a freeway than residential streets or even arterial roads such as Mcormond.

Had there been better planning we wouldn't need the parkway bridge and the perimeter highway bridge. I'm sure one bridge could have been sufficient.

Warman and Martensville aren't too far out from Saskatoon anymore. I think it's likely their new name, if growth continues apace, will be "Annexed".

Just saw yesterday that the new steakhouse and lounge has opened in the old Tusq location on 21st Street (across from S'toon Club). Hope it does well...it is a prime location (no pun intended).

I don't think they will be annexed. It will be like Edmonton with Sherwood park and St Albert. Both cities are still their own identity.

I've noticed that old marquee sitting in a lot off to the right of Circle Drive South coming up beside the flyover towards Clarence and thought it would be cool if someone could make use of it. Seeing the new club with the "Capitol Music Club coming soon" sign up I thought they might use it for that, which will be really cool if they do!
