two words Tim Leiweke. he was the man behind the plans to bring an NFL team to LA when he was the head of AEG. perhaps he still owns title to those drawings and has strong contacts with the architect. MLSE wants to buy the argos and move them to BMO and have them on solid ground.

the nfl wont come to toronto until it is assured it can co exist with a healthy argos team. MLSE and tim have this all planned out. he is a very smart man. i'd bet on it happening within 10 years, with most of the costs coming from the private sector

and to those who think Canada doesn't have a chance at the WC think again. after the corruption, politics, and negative press that FIFA has gotten with awarding the world cup to brazil, russia, and quatar they are looking for a neutral venue to host where there are no scandals. not to mention it will be 32 years since North America has hosted the WC. Mexico has already hosted twice (they won't get it a third time) with the USA having played host already. Europe, Asia, South America, Africa have all or will soon host leaving North America remaining this has been in the works for years and at CSA head offices and a serious bid will be made

I've seen you attack others for having a different opinion in the past - actually calling people names.

Seriously, STFU already. You're embarrassing yourself.

EDIT: actually, I'm going to make use of the nice "Ignore" feature the board offers.

The only problem is Tim Lieweke wasn't able to bring a team to LA. Also listen to his reaction to the question of NFL to Toronto, in the interview I posted. Either he knows it ain't gonna be happening or he wants to keep from putting his foot in his mouth from making the colossal screwup even worse.

Try adding something to the thread sometime instead of your well timed trolling.

Forgot about that, you're right though. It would never happen, if the document was real.

It's difficult (next to impossible) for Canadian projects to get funding from the federal government if they are not for educational/sport infrastructure or an international athletic event.

But there is no way on God's green earth that there would be any funding for anything that would be flipped to the richest sporting venture in the world that is foreign operated and would also negatively harm a Canadian institution.

Where did buddy find that bogus thing anyway?

I used the google image search and came up with this:

I've never seen it before.

Yes that was where the link in my post lead. You'll notice on the bottom left of the drawing it says Canadian Football Stadium Design Client Confidential. Don't think that would be a CSA drawing, do you?

Actually the exterior reminds a bit of BMO and the roof kind of like an early conception of Hamilton.

I'd like to say, nice try to the guy who came up with this but it wasn't even a nice try. Gotta do better than that, must think we're all stoooopid.

I knew right away that it wasn't an official CSA document, probably just a fan made compilation.
I'm trying to figure out where this 28,000 seat stadium would be located though. The mountains in the background suggest it is Calgary, however in the description it says it's for a "new North American sports franchise" so it can't be for the Stampeders.

Please tell me Calgary will build bigger than that. A new Calgary stadium should be minimum bigger than 35,000. A city of its size should have something big and fancy.

Don't think you will see much bigger than that, maybe 40k at the very most. Maximizing revenues is where it's at. Getting people off their couches and HDTVs will be difficult enough and empty seats don't help the bottom line. Edmonton wishes they were still at 40k.

I just think the design is too simple for Calgary who have Winnipeg and Saskatchewan to follow. This design was done before 2011 so who was in the market for a stadium then, Hamilton and Toronto (distant hills aside) Calgary has also stated privately that they will likely not do this on the cheap but that concept drawing was a mystery in 2011 when I first saw it and still is.

I can't imagine who else that would have been intended before besides Calgary... the scale of the stadium screams CFL, and the mountains in the background suggest Calgary. If you look at the second photo provided on that website, there are even small photos of Stampeders mounted on the stadium walls.

Actually I think that "New Calgary Stadium" was proposed for a Halifax CFL stadium. Looks similar to the Halifax one also.

If this is what you're talking about, I see a Stamp, a Lion and an Eskimo (to the left)

Aside from the hills (could be mountains) in the background of the other render it doesn't scream Calgary to me.

The new Regina stadium will be the jewel of stadi in Canada and we get shafted.

Not to mention neither Regina or Winnipeg received federal dollars to build there stadium. Canada does not revolve around southern Ontario FFS!!
I think it has more to do with infrastructure, hotel rooms, transit, etc.

That's a terrible football stadium IMO as there are just as many end zone seats as sideline seats.

I'd say 35,000 max permanent capacity with the ability to expand to ~50,000 for the odd event is what Calgary needs. The Stampeders are popular but still just cracking 30,000 people on average though I'd say that's in no small part because McMahon is just an absolutely terrible place to go to a game.

But even in a new stadium downtown I don't think the support would justify going any bigger than ~35,000 except for the special events like the Grey Cup. Cheaper to build, operate and creates a better atmosphere.

35K expandable to 50K is a reasonable size for Calgary. The reality is that the Stamps would be unlikely to draw much more than 35K a game for the foreseeable future, and they would probably benefit more from creating a bit of scarcity as opposed to putting up 45K seats that won't be full most of the time. Building a large Commonwealth Stadium-sized facility is prohibitively expensive and there is no real reason to do it, not to mention it is a bit of an atmosphere killer... Commonwealth is awesome but it is so big that even a respectable crowd of 35K still seems modest in there.

That's basically my thinking. Those last 5,000 seats are the most expensive to build and it creates 5,000 tickets that become the hardest to sell. It's all about finding that magic number where you can sell out with enough demand left over to keep ticket prices as high as possible. Depending on the market and events that could be 35,000 or 50,000 or 90,000. Calgary has the Stampeders and maybe some future high profile soccer and rugby games which don't need much more than 35K so the only events I can think of that would need to be closer to 50K are the Grey Cup (1/9 years basically), Heritage Classic (maybe, but I think that is dying down) and Opening and Closing Ceremonies (my personal pipe dream, would happen once at most). No need to build a stadium for maybe seven events for the course of it's life (five of those being Grey Cups if you're lucky).
