Interesting. That's the first I've seen of the World Cup proposal. I have to say at first glance they are severely under-estimating the amount of government dollars that would have to go into these facilities, especially the new ones.

No way does that Toronto Stadium would only receive $200 million in government money. The private sector would not commit $800 million (assuming it's a $1 billion stadium) to fund it. The new stadiums in Calgary and Halifax are under-estimated in terms of cost as well..unless they actually assume the private sector will step up and contribute significant money which is highly dubious. Renovating the Big O would probably be more than $400 million as well.

The Big O: the government project that just keeps on taking.

Canada needs to push for the 2023 Rugby World Cup as well if so much government money is going into this (combined with Calgary's 2026 Olympic bid ). Would be a great dress rehearsal as it is still a large event that would use all the stadiums, but doesn't have quite the impact and stresses of the FIFA World Cup.

God almighty. You could build a beautiful new outdoor stadium for that kind of money.

What possible purpose could there be to spend that kind of money on a new roof for an obsolete stadium given that it does not have any full time tenants? The Impact and the Alouettes each have their own homes and I can't imagine them giving those up for the Big O. A $300M roof for the occasional rock concert or the boat show seems crazy in a city that has plenty of suitable venues for those kinds of events.

Can't the place just function as an outdoor stadium without a roof the way it did for the first decade of its existence?

400m more of taxpayer dollars on the Big Oh just so they can host a few soccer games? Not a chance in hell. If someone wants to privately fund it - knock yourself out.

As much as I'd like to see an NFL stadium in Toronto, the whole FIFA thing is a pipe dream.

I think for Ottawa it would be more around $50 million to expand the dtadium and build a new mega parking garage which would be needed for the World Cup.

Even in Ottawa's case i would be shocked if you could expand the stadium for $25 million it would be more around $50 million maybe even higher then that.

It's no more of a pipe dream than the NFL. Toronto had its chance to prove to the NFL that it's a football town. It failed miserably. London and Mexico City are far more likely expansion choices.

Regina's new stadium will be the best in Canada for a long time to come. And all we get is group play. But no lets put the better games in some old run down common wealth stadium. A stadium in Calgary that has yet to be conformed 100% and Hamilton and Ottawa which are pretty much building a new mosaic stadium. The new Regina stadium will be the jewel of stadi in Canada and we get shafted.

Not to mention neither Regina or Winnipeg received federal dollars to build there stadium. Canada does not revolve around southern Ontario FFS!!

It's to do with capacity. Regina's stadium will be expandable to 40,000, while Commonwealth's is much bigger.

I couldn't believe anybody didn't notice Farmer's Field (until I read your post), the first Halifax stadium is Moncton and I've seen the second Calgary stadium before 2011. Found it

I could be wrong but the second Halifax stadium looks suspiciously like an earlier render of TEmpire in Vancouver. I realize the two below are not the same.

I did not notice it was the LA stadium but did find it odd that the CSA would refer to a Toronto NFL stadium in a proposal it would make for the WC.

And there's a thread asking whether people love, hate or are indifferent to the US. I guess we know which camp you fall in.

And if Canada were to host the World Cup, then Toronto would HAVE to get a new stadium (won't happen without it) - which increases the odds of Toronto getting an NFL team big time. I care nothing about soccer, but by all means - host away!
