^Cost was never the issue. Building on the same site was more of a compromise than anything else - a bizarre, twisted compromise that left most Hamiltonians stunned and bewildered.

Besides, the Red Wings are the ninth most valuable team in the NHL and are part of the storied Original 6 Teams. If the owners pack up because they don't get funding for the arena, they're complete idiots.

Plenty of teams have built their own house over the years, from the biggest (Air Canada Centre in Toronto and Molson Centre in Montreal) and smallest (Corel Centre in Ottawa and MTS Centre in Winnipeg) franchises.

The thing that bugs me with Detroit is the city is bankrupt yet they can give $200 million plus for a arena no matter how you look at it that is just wrong.

I think there's too much to fix, the state and city is just one big tire fire. It's just easier to keep on with the typical "this will revitalize the area and the entertainment district will attract business" talk than come up with real solutions for that city. I think they've even tried to get a guaranteed number of Detroit workers in on the project to try and justify the money as well, but I can see that being tossed aside pretty quickly if it hasn't been already.

Actually, the money is coming from the city itself. The state will issue bonds (as I believe they have taken over finances of the city of Detroit since the bankruptcy), but the bonds will be paid back by re-directing property taxes collected within the city of Detroit that would have otherwise gone to stupid stuff like funding schools and police & firemen.
