How does this connote success?
On that note, I can't imagine Zaifman having much problem getting government money. He's friends with Katz, and Winnipeg's other favorite son, Andrew Marquess, has been quite adept at squeezing money from the city with one hand while violating it with the other. But he's not even asking. He just wants to demolish the building.

You ever heard of Greg O'donnell, Simplicity? He was a retired cop who redeveloped Red Hook, in Brooklyn. He converted old buildings with the intent of converting a neighborhood--this meant, in his case, renting retail space dirt cheap and making his money off residential. Incidentally, he's now a millionaire.

Now you say the markets aren't the same but: Red Hook was crap, and the real point is the big-picture thinking Trueviking is talking about. There's a reason Vancouver has view cones. Get rid of the good things about a place, and it won't be good any more.

Also, O'donnell replicated his success in Red Hook in some toilet of a town up state.

My office is also in the Exchange. I've been there since 2003. If there's something I'm missing, I'm all ears.
seriously?...the exchanged hasn't changed significantly in the last 10 years?....i wont even justify that.

i don't know if developers are getting rich or not...i don't really care...all i know is that quite a few of them have redeveloped heritage buildings in the last 15 years....to me that is success....the argument is should zaifman be allowed to tear down his building....the answer is no, because there appears to be a number of developers in the area willing to redevelop heritage projects...that cant be argued....its just a fact....i consider all those projects on princess a success....and the dozens of other heritage buildings that have been restored for office, retail, whatever.

the residential grant program has assisted the market for sure, but the government subsidizes suburban development even more....we are building a downtown residential market....hopefully one day it stands on its own...the best opportunity for that to happen is to maintain the buildings that create the demand.

I dont know what your criteria for success is but a developed building is mine...and in a winnipeg context, the area has seen an amazing amount of that since the construction of waterfront drive. When i started working in the exchange, the only residential building was ashdown, now there are easily 25 residential buildings in the exchange.....how many new residential buildings have been built or converted in the rest of downtown in the last 10 years?....two?....the only retail in the area was a few antique shops, how many restaurants and shops are there today?...why would it be happening in the historic neighbourhood i wonder?....any guesses?

fact is many heritage buildings are getting redeveloped.....that cant be argued....the exchange is the fastest growing part of downtown by a long way...residentially and commercially....somebody's making money somewhere or it wouldn't be happening....and it is happening there instead of somewhere else because of the old buildings...the only reason......so, no zaifman has no right to break the rules....

First real claim Winnipeg claim center MPI had after starting out in the old Safeway store at St. Anne and St. Mary. And as noted above was donated to Ma Mawi Wi Chi Itata when the Main St. service center opened up.

The old Selkirk MB claim center is now the home of the Selkirk Transit system after the Selkirk Service center opened on Manitoba Ave next to the big box power center.

The cube project or whatever it's called at the east side of the Disraeli looks like a housing project. They have been working on it for what 3-4 years now, still slathered in Tyvec, crap windows and building materials, who but the govt. would buy units there?

Our office is moving to the exchange in June ... we are about 120 persons. Moving into a heritage building. Proof that development and an increased population in this area is happening ... you just might not be seeing it Simplicity because it is not boom development, it is slow and steady. And no City incentives for us to move their either.

Personally, I can't wait to be working in this area again ... especially with all the new restaurants including Clay Oven in place of the over-sauced dishes that Hu's served.

My offices are on the north border of the Exchange in Chinatown. Some people have been there over 20 years and are amazed at how it has changed over that time. And it keeps on going. Amazing what the Union Tower and Parlour Coffee has added in just the last couple of years.

http://www.winnipegfreepress.com/local/precinct-k-whats-the-rush-251749871.html

Precinct K: What's the rush?
When suburban growth outpaces population growth, this type of uncontrolled expansion is not OK

Although I agree with the overall point of the article, which is sustainable growth. I find this rather amusing.

"Since the Complete Communities plan was approved in 2011, Winnipeg has only grown by about 25,000 people.."

Only grew by 25,000 people in the last 2.5 years.. Oh what a downer! Stop the presses, Winnipeg is dead!

What have we been up to lately?

Well, we have several new buildings to launch in the next few months, one of which might very well be Your Next Place!

Keep an eye on our website this week for more details and to add your name to the wait lists so you can be the first notified when we begin leasing!
These guys have done a few things in the core, perhaps they have something new coming there. On their website they have a few "coming soon", including a couple brand new buildings:
