That's a great point, I never realised how close those cities are to each other.
I think the reason the perception might differ is that Philadelphia (~6 million) is only
1/3 the population of New York (~20 million) and Baltimore (~2.75 million) is only
1/2 the population of Washington (~5.8 million)
Compare that to Hamilton (~750,000) which only has
1/8 the population of Toronto (~6,000,000)
Not saying that means Hamilton is a suburb (I personally don't believe it is) but I definitely think size difference plays a role in the opinions of some people.
