That was the 20-storey Hotel de la Montagne, demolished in the past months to be replaced by a larger Ogilvy.

Looking at this pic, I noticed One King West, the shorter building around Scotia Plaza, Commerce Court and First Canadian Place, for the first time. Did a quick research and Google maped it. I was reminded of how much of a great job Toronto has done in preserving some of its early skyscrapers by incorporating them into new towers. Very impressive.

Stunning! I think the CIBC Tower is might be my favourite modern building anywhere. I love Montreal's diversity; all the different eras, heights, styles...

Why not? I always kind of liked those spires and antennas, gives buildings an extra distinctive feature.

I'm not sure, I guess it just takes away from the boxiness. It looks awkward to have a thick square tower and then randomly a super skinny needle sticking out of it. I don't mind it on the Empire State Building cause it fits the architecture, but anything like the old World Trade Center just seems off to me

I see your point regarding the bank towers, but I suppose it boils down to personal taste. I prefer the mountain effect that steps up towards the peak. Ironically, I usually prefer the juxtaposition of park/water with a strong apron of buildings. I'm not sure why I don't like it in this instance. Perhaps because it's not linear like one would find if buildings are aligned along a street (like one sees on Park Avenue next to Central Park).

North, my personal favourite. Ultra urban, different colours and architectural styles.

South, I agree was much better 10+ years ago. Now it's just too much of the same style and colour, and the new buildings by the lake take away from the financial district.

East1, I like it. Possibly because it's a night shot. Looks like a big, powerful city beyond a waste land.

East2, one word: Ottawa.

We seem to see it exactly the same way. Ottawa?

Here's an intriguing shot of Montreal's north-facing pseudo skyline (cotes-des-neiges area)

i say intriguing, because it positively looks like someone has superimposed a laval suburb clipart onto a picturesque Swiss town.
