I agree with that. But, I would recommend splitting up SLC, Ogden, and Provo. They are all very different from each other.

...Utah's unemployment rate in January hit a five-year low, falling to 3.9 percent, according to the state Department of Workforce Services. Utah’s nonfarm payroll employment for January grew by an estimated 2.8 percent, adding 34,700 jobs to the economy, compared with January 2013

Speaking at a news conference Friday at the state Capitol, Gov. Gary Herbert said the state economy has picked up speed and seems on track for continued growth in 2014.

"For the first time since the start of the Great Recession in Utah, our unemployment rate has fallen below 4 percent,” Herbert said. “This attests to the fact that our economy is strong and getting stronger."

The current Utah jobless rate is the lowest recorded in the Beehive State since November 2008, he added.

"This is especially encouraging because much of the decline in unemployment is due to Utahns getting jobs rather than dropping out and abandoning the search," Herbert said. "Since November 2008, when unemployment was 3.4 percent, Utah's labor force has grown by 6 percent or nearly 80,000 people."...

I was able to attend that "Creative City" lecture yesterday with Charles Landry; met Derrick, some other nerds I know via Twitter who should really be on this site.

Anyway, it was a really good lecture. He used specific examples from Salt Lake City that he thought were bad, good, needed some nudges, and was emphasizing the benefits of having a "Creative City." I hope the right people were in the crowd to implement some of the positive changes he was talking about.

I don't think it was posted. Thanks for the update, now onto the Senate for a vote. Considering it passed the committee unanimously and it passed the Senate easily last year, I don't anticipate it being a problem. I don't anticipate Herbie vetoing it either.

As Makid has pointed out regarding the progress it is making just waiting for the bill to pass, I think we'll see some serious movement on this once Herbie signs it.

It really just makes me shake my head that Mr. Van Tassell with the Utah Taxpayers Association just has to oppose it no matter what. The Hotel and Lodging association now supports it so because of that he has to come up with some other lame reason to oppose it? Seriously did anyone understand his "Romantic weekend" argument?

I think it's a convoluted way of saying that the CCH will take existing non-convention business away from other area hotels--which is what the mitigation fund established by HB356 is supposed to, you know, mitigate.

Like I said, the overall look and design of a potential CCH will be determined by whether it's a Hilton, Hyatt (Grand or Regency), Marriott, Radisson, Westin, Sheraton, Omni, etc. All those companies have certain looks and styles to their large hotels they build.

All things considered, and if I were to bet, I think the potential SLC CCH will be an Omni or a Westin.

My guess would be Marriott. We have local connections who know the value of the SLC market.

Also, Marriott had plans to build a 1,000 room hotel across from the Salt Palace 10 years ago, but Grand America/Clint Ensign successfully lobbied against it.

You think they'd keep their existing hotel across West Temple? Or offload it onto some other hotelier?

Since we already have 2 Marriotts downtown if it does end up being a Marriott Brand Hotel I would venture to guess it will be one of the following higher end/luxury brands: Renaissance, JW Marriott or Ritz Carlton. They have a few other high end brands, but those are my guesses, of the three I would guess Renaissance.
