Great news about that speedskating facility in Quebec. When it's built, Canada will have 2 outstanding indoor facilities, one in the west (Calgary) and one in the east (Quebec), not to mention outdoor ones like Winnipeg's, which should produce even more top-level speedskaters. Hopefully Canada can improve their medal haul at the Olympics in long track to the levels last seen from the late 90s to 2010.

It was retrofitted after the games. It's now a multi-sport community centre

But can be converted back to a long-track oval if the need arises.

Ice Speed Skating Ovals and Clubs in Canada

All ice speed skating ovals in Canada are natural ice ovals, except for Calgary, Fort St. John, BC, Quebec City (Ste-Foy), Halifax (and Richmond, BC). Only Calgary, Fort St. John (and Richmond) are covered.

Ste-Foy has been around a long time, I believe many of our Olympians trained there before Calgary, I didn't even know about Halifax having an oval (see below). Learn something new everyday!

Meaning 6/7 weeks to get all the slabs up there.
The way they have been going at it, it could be three. It looks like almost half has been done in one week. And I think they are working today (Saturday). Yup, they are putting slabs in as I post! Fingers crossed.

Tim Hortons Field Hamilton March 1/2014

Notice you can see the new slab (looks like a white bar) on the right next to the vomitory opening prior to being placed in the bottom row.

End of the day

Edmonton has an outdoor speed skating oval in the river valley in front of downtown in Victoria park. It uses the Zamboni from the Calgary Olympics.

I like it, for all the people complaining that it is plain, other than a roof (which most NFL stadiums do not have) what is the issue? It has all the immenities of a full modern stadium and does not look anything like a "high-school" stadium IMO. Again it is not IGF in Winnipeg but it is also $50M less expenisive.

I personally think its criticism is undeserved but I think most of it comes from being a really simple stadium. It's just two grandstands spanning the sidelines, without any curves or design elements of any kind really. That being said I quite like it. The utilitarian look of it and exposed steel beams really say "Hamilton" to me, in a good way.

I think they should have used more brick on the exterior as that would have blended in with the surrounding neighbourhood. Many of the houses surrounding the stadium are brick. Would have given the stadium a more "finished" look.

My wishlist for THF would have included the following:

-A slightly higher capacity of 26 to 28 thousand achieved by extending the grandstands a bit at each end and adding permanent seating in one of the end zones
-Better materials on the exterior - the chosen design looks very simple, almost as though it was a temporary structure
-At least some manner of seating cover - didn't have to be a huge IGF style roof, but at least an overhang to protect some of the seats from weather
-No large seating cutout right on the 55 yard line

It's not a terrible stadium - it isn't fundamentally flawed or anything, but it is extremely modest and almost underwhelming for a city of Hamilton's size and rich football history.

Where gov't handouts are concerned, beggars can't be choosers. TiCat fans are lucky they added that endzone plaza and that little curve at the end of the grandstand.

As a fan and a Hamiltonian, I'm still not sure how we ended up here but it's done - fans will be happy and Bob Young a little richer. Emphasis on little.
