Work is now underway to prepare the arena site for the construction of Rogers Place, which is expected to start in March 2014.
Work includes removing trees on the arena site and upgrading the lot just north of Baccarat Casino to create a new entrance and parking spaces for casino patrons.
The new entrance for the Baccarat Casino will be off of 101 Street and 105 Avenue. The current entrance will remain open until the new access route is completed.
New parking stalls are being built north of the casino. These stalls will replace some of the existing parking which will be removed once construction on Rogers Place gets underway.
Trees on the site where Rogers Place will be built, which includes the boulevard, will be removed and chipped for recycling. The area will be re-landscaped through the arena budget and the City’s green and walkable program.
This work is expected to take two weeks to complete. The majority of the work will be done on site. No traffic disruptions are expected to occur.
For ongoing updates on the construction of Rogers Place, please visit edmonton.ca/downtownarena.
The :30 second part to about :53 is incredible! Will the LRT go underneath as well? Easily the best building in Canada if not the world. Seriously.

No way we ever get anything remotely as cool as that here in Calgary with Nenshi not being on board. I'm not saying what the city of Edmonton did was right or wrong, just saying at the end of the day, that will be impossible to top.

Best part is that even if the team — you still get to see an architectural marvel.

International Soccer Friendlies: Canada vs. Germany and Japan at BC Place

Canada’s flagship stadium BC Place will be hosting two major international soccer (football) matches this year in the lead up to the FIFA Women’s World Cup Canada 2015.

Canada will host two-time FIFA Women’s World Cup winners Germany on Wednesday, June 18, 2014 and the reigning FIFA Women’s World Cup champion Japan on Tuesday, October 28, 2014.

The two matches will provide Canadian soccer fans with an incredible opportunity to cheer on Canada, led by inspiration captain Christine Sinclair, as the team builds momentum towards next year’s Women’s World Cup held on Canadian territory.

In the summer of 2015, BC Place will become one of the primary venues of the international tournament and is slated to host the final match in the championship.

Speaking of Germany (a little off topic here), last night I watched an interesting doc that featured some of Nazi Germany's stadium architecture (completed and not completed).

I'll be pleasantly surprised if the Ticats play a game there in 2014.

I'd be amazed, quite frankly. The season is only 4 months out and they're still working on the structure itself.

It would be nice to see some higher-res shots of the stadium and its surroundings to get a sense as to how it fits into the area. For what it's worth, THF is starting to come together nicely. Even though I still think they should have aimed higher with the design, THF looks like a real improvement over Ivor Wynne Stadium.

I hope the folks in Halifax are paying attention to THF... this could be a nice model for a modest, relatively low-cost CFL stadium on the east coast.

LRT comes out of a portal just east and a surface stop is adjacent to the north.

IIRC that was taken into consideration. The designers didn't want to overwhelm the residential neighbourhood with the stadium's footprint or design. Add to that the limited budget and you get a somewhat utilitarian design, but I think it will look better than people think when it is finished.

Infrastructure Ontario and the contactors would take an absolute bath on any profit if it happened, they need more bodies on site to pick up the pace of the work, again it is cheaper to do that that pay the penaties if the TiCats miss games there. Will it be down to the wire, YES, but its not like the Winnipeg situation because there is no roof going up

My thoughts EXACTLY! Not the prettiest facility out there, but it looks to have it where it counts, so any municipality looking to make a go at hosting that ever-elusive tenth team should look at THF for a quality, low-cost facility. People in Hamilton were (understandably) disappointed at the design, but I think Haligonians would be over the moon if they got a stadium with these amenities.

Tks to HA1912GCC at ticats.ca for headsup

I'm posting this to both the Sports in Canadian Culture thread and the Canadian Stadiums thread because it concerns both.

Great commercial from the 60s for Carling Red Cap beer, featuring stars of the CFL, at a time when most people weren't supplanting their support to a foreign league. It also has as a background Varsity Stadium (I think), which was a great icon of its time. Looking at it, it was kinda sad they didn't do a Percival Molson (pardon the expression) and refurb it.

Carling Red Cap Historical Compilation Reel (Part 2) starts at 1:25

Isn't the Ti-Cats first home date July 23rd or something? That gives them 5 months to get it ready enough to host a game (not necessarily completed).

I agree with your comment of Halifax using THF as a model to build from.

Live feed from Quebec City's arena construction site. Seems like they be starting working of the roof pretty soon.

I wish them luck, but even without a Winnipeg-style roof to complicate things there is still an awful lot of work to do before the July 23 date.

As for Halifax, I'd say that a THF-style stadium would work well there... it would be a way to build an important civic amenity that will last for 50 years or more without breaking the bank. When it comes to Hamilton I'd say that more was expected given that city's rich football history... but that isn't quite the case in Halifax.

I agree.

There was a lot of hand-wringing over the city's portion of the funding (and justifiably so) and increasing that wouldn't have flown. But the team could have stepped up to add money to the pot, and they didn't... despite promises of making substantial investments when their preferred site was under discussion.

They still might in the future, but we'd probably be talking about adding seats or other functional improvements rather than aesthetics.

Say 12 weeks to put the seats, handrails to vomitories etc in based what they did at Commonwealth stadium - which means all the seating slabs need to be in place by April 12 (I'm counting back from July 18th - they will need to have a test event at the stadium before allowing a full event there - BMO Field let TFC fans into the stadium a week before it opened and they watched a game on the video board - had concessions open etc).

Meaning 6/7 weeks to get all the slabs up there.

Also, just checked the website there and there is still 5,000 season tickets for sale

I think they could put the seats in as quickly as 9 weeks (22500/2500 per week) and judging by the way they are tossing those slabs in there, I'm hoping they'll be done a lot quicker than 6/7 weeks.

With cooperation from the weather and wind gods the slabs in that section should go up fairly fast. I imagine the topmost rows beneath the structure of the pressbox will take longer due to more complex maneuvering being required.

But then we won't see much in the way of progress from the construction cams until seat installation begins. I predict that will be cause for the rubbing of worry beads.

^Is the reason you want Hamilton to fail is because Winnipeg f'ed it up so bad? Why the failure glee? Can't understand it at all.
