One example of what 1ajs would be referring to, from a simple google search:

Quote:
The rental housing construction tax credit is a new financial incentive for private and non-profit housing developers, including non-profit co-operatives, building new rental housing. Developers can offset their investments through a tax credit of up to eight per cent, to a maximum of $12,000 per unit.

So for a 200 unit apartment tower, they could be getting a tax break of $2.4M? That, to me, is ridiculous.

What is considered private? Anything non-government, or some joe blow building a small apartment block?

I believe they have limits to the size:cost ratio... If it's a 2BR place and they charge less than $x a month, they can get this much in tax breaks, if they charge between $x and $y they get this much, and if they charge more than y they can't qualify.

Not quite.

Ya -- I think I was quoting from the City of Winnipeg downtown residential grant program...

I believe those brown panels on the podium are Corten Steel which I love. Hopefully trueviking can chime in and confirm.

I really like all the upgrades going on around downtown to go with all the new projects.

Not bad - you can only do so much with the old PLR building which was never the prettiest to begin with.

Hopefully it works out like the old Sheraton next door did. That building became a gorgeous apartment building and the people I know who have lived in there since it was renovated are exactly the kinds of people Winnipeg needs more of downtown - young professionals with money to spend.

TV also posted a sweet plan for what could have been a Winnipeg very inner ring road.

One part did actually get built, the Disraeli Freeway. So when you question the freeway title, this is why!

The U of W, St. Boniface, Osborne Village (as we know it, the highrises) and Norwood would all be destroyed. North End though...

That's a really nice shot! It's pretty difficult to find a vantage point that offers an encompassing view of the skyline. I'd like to see a similar photo a zillion times larger, ha.

^ I've driven down Notre Dame countless times, but I have to admit it took me a few seconds to place it... I'm not used to seeing it from that perspective. Great photo.

From that vantage point, Notre Dame looks like some grand boulevard... like Winnipeg's Champs-Elysee. Of course, it falls somewhat short of that standard when you're at ground level

this will be a big spring summer in determining which direction our downtown is going.. convention center development should be closer to completion hopefully we will get more details on the hotel phase of the project.

Fortress a pie in the sky? i still dont believe this will proceed especially if they require government money to fund part of the start up costs

D condos i reallly think they might scale this project down... or proceed even though they underestimated the costs.. I think a project of this scale and the amount of presold units they have means this will go forward

glasshouse condos should get started

u of w 14 story high rise residence should start construction..

hopefully details on the wag expansion will be revealed... a reendering possibly

chrm opening in sept oct

hopefully more proposals... maybe the project at portage and main will be finalized and finally proceed.

Normal School re-development in St B

Quote:
A Port In the Storm will provide a forty-room guest facility in Old St. Boniface. The building will feature social support spaces including shared kitchens, laundry, exercise, tele-health stations and common areas. The business model enables reduced-cost accommodations based on a “home-away-from-home” concept. The facility design includes adaptive reuse of 210 Masson, formerly the St. Boniface Normal School, a Provincially designated Heritage site.
