Clearly some people want to fly there otherwise they wouldn't be added, not sure how more transborder flights is a bad thing

Just a note on Delta to MSP. Summer will continue as 2x daily this summer (was 3x daily last year), but we will see the return on mainline A319 on the morning flights. Good to see.

Record air cargo growth at Edmonton International Airport
Monday, February 24

Edmonton International Airport (EIA) continues to outperform the global air cargo industry. Air cargo volume grew by 8.3% at EIA in 2013, six times the global average of 1.4%. EIA also registered its 15th consecutive quarter of cargo growth in Q4 of 2013, with total volume growing by 23% over the past four years.

“The consistent growth we’re seeing at EIA in a sector that has been facing a challenging environment across the globe is a testament to the strong return-on-investment air carriers are achieving here, courtesy of our growing community of freight forwarders, brokers, manufacturers and shippers,” says Norm Richard, Director of Air Service Development (Cargo) at EIA.

“Our cargo operations are at record levels. The growth we’re seeing in air cargo speaks volumes to the strength of the economy of central and northern Alberta. EIA has excellent capacity, superb facilities and is positioned for continued growth,” says Myron Keehn, EIA Vice President for Commercial Development.

Factors contributing to EIA’s cargo growth in 2013 include:

11% volume increase by pure-freight carriers FedEx, Cargojet, Purolator and DHL
FedEx’s up-gauging of daily Edmonton-Memphis service to a wide-body Airbus A310 freighter in January 2013
DHL’s up-gauging of Edmonton-Cincinnati service to wide-body Boeing 767 freighter during the holiday peak season
Cargojet’s doubling of flight frequency during the holiday peak season
15% volume increase by cargo charter operators

I think when Bigtime says EPO he meant, although he does not know, ESO. As in the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra. And I am with Cold: we need more flights to centres with strong cultural and academic presence. More New York, and the addition of Boston, Washington DC - and the list goes on.

Before you add more flights to the eastern seaboard of the US, we need to ensure the UAL flights to EWR are running at capacity in both directions. From what I see the load factors are fairly weak.

I have taken the EWR-YEG segment around 15 times since May of last year, my experience is that on Sundays - the EWR-YEG is always packed. on Weekdays, the load factor is hard to predict.

YEG-EWR tends to do well around Thursdays/Fridays and tends to be weaker on other days of the week.

I think that over the year, my guess is that the route is averaging between 60 and 70%. I say not too bad for a new route. But it will get stronger in 2014 and even stronger in 2016. UAL knows the YEG market very well and if the route did not meet their expectations, they would have simply added capacity to ORD and pulled EWR altogether.

Agree^ I am not saying UAL is doing bad, just that the route needs to get better returns before we start asking for more carriers. Chicago still preforms very well, thus the addition of the 3x on Sundays this spring.

Just waiting for some more capacity to IAH. That route is always overbooked...always. Actually MSP and DEN are becoming crazy in that regard as well.

A friend was on the YEG-MSP flight this morning and it was overbooked.

Seriously though, as a former Edmontonian I understand the desire for better service, it has begun happening. But to expect a link to several new destinations in a very short frame of time is unrealistic. It's coming bit by bit and if I hear anything solid I'll post it in advance...

For now enjoy the growth and new additions and increases as they come... They are all very, very good signs of a strong healthy growing airport!

*Oh and just 7 days until Icelandairs inaugural flight to YEG!!!
