Yeah all those reasons make sense. GEG is getting a 1X weekly ATL for the summer, maybe we will see the same level of service to YYC this summer..

In terms of new non-domestic routes, any thoughts on what the next likely destination/airline will be? For US, I'm guessing WS to SEA & PDX with Encore, especially if they can get the AS/DL codeshares this could be a successful flight.

Int. is a bit tougher...maybe a return of LH to FRA or MUC? I think a summertime flight to MUC could work, though if they couldn't make the 343 work and no 330's are free this could be tough.

I am predicting mainlaind China service in 2015 (to coincide with IFP)..question is would it be AC or one of the Chinese carriers?

I agree that Encore will possibly expand into SEA and PDX in due time.

I highly doubt MUC will ever happen beyond TS possibly adding it as a seasonal charter as they have in the past. LH likely wouldn't offer service to YYC from a secondary hub if they can't sustain YYC-FRA. Now with AC flooding the YYC-FRA route with the 77W that seems even less likely to be restored.

And I agree that YYC-PEK stands a chance of being added in 2015 if not at the very least announced by AC who seems to have shown a interest in launching the route. However I suspect the first batch of AC 788's will be YYZ and YVR committed for some time to come as we have already seen with the first 788 routes being announced.

Rouge will very likely take over the YYC-Hawaii runs aswell as most other ''vacation'' routes. And in due time I see a 788 being placed on the YYC-NRT route.

This summer will be critical for BA and its 788 ops into YYC with AC beefing up seats on a route that BA has already been treading water on, it may determine if BA sticks to the route or bails out.

Somebody on A.net thinks YYC-HNL/OGG is a potential 787 route. Ya don't say.

The same guy who stated the 787 will be used on the "new" YYC-PEK route "this summer"? Lol

That at least is feasible, anything OGG/HNL has Rouge written all over it.

EK just announced ORD with 77L. Shocked this is not YYC. Shocked!

Delta summer changes

Delta is making MSP all mainline for the summer scheds.

2 daily A320s.

Frequency drops from 3 daily to 2 but capacity is unchanged as the 2 CR9s replaced by one of the daily 320s is a wash.

SLC and ATL remain unchanged.

I am curious to see if YYC-NRT would be deserving of an upgauge, I am hearing that loads are pretty packed on this leg, which leads me to believe that the route may have finally matured enough to warrant a capacity upgrade or additional competition.
From various posting over the years this route has recovered from the 2011 events and it's clear this is a very good money maker for the airline and much of the local travelers finally caught on. I prefer ANA or JAL return with their heavy equipment for additional choice to the discerning and airline savvy customers.

One of my coworkers goes back to Japan using this flight once to twice a year and always tells me the flight is loaded in the %90's or sold out.
I could see a 788 year round or a seasonal 77W swap just like the London and Frankfurt runs that AC is doing this year.

Also I could see Rouge penetrating the German tourist market to cities like Munich and Hamburg someday. I know TS does MUC in the summer but Rouge may be a nicer product. (knock on wood, or Plastic laminate finished as wood lol)
Squeezing a 4-5 day weekend gauntlet trip to Munich for Oktoberfest on a direct flight would be more than doable.

Why is this funny?

When you guys reference obscure airports, why do you have to write the airport code instead of the city? Is it that much extra effort to write "Spokane" instead of "GEG," which nobody has ever heard of? Yes I can and do look it up but I can't be the only person who reads this thread that finds this annoying.

I'm not talking about OGG. I'm talking about this entire thread.

That is funny because to me, it is so implausible for the foreseeable future that it made me chuckle. I don't expect normal people to find these sorts of mundane things funny.

As for the codes... uhh well if it's an airport I suspect nobody has heard of then I'll write it out? But I "think" in terms of the code, the name of the city itself is just an after thought. That's my excuse, anyway. Again... not normal.

Rusty, YYC-Hawaii (Honolulu and Kahului) are low yield leisure routes, with very little demand for a premium front end cabin. So utilizing the brand spanking new Dreamliner with its Business First cabin and premium economy section doesn't make much sense.

Much better to put an AC Rouge 763 on the route jam packed with seats and charge customers for every little extra.

You should blame twitter, airport codes to refer to cities was the proud domain of us Avgeeks, now it's becoming common vernacular (is that the right word for here Rusty?).

Heck when I was in Maui a few weeks ago one awesome store had all sorts of vintage style Pan-Am stuff. Including a sweet t-shirt with OGG on it (Maui-Kahului airport code).

If I am doing some serious aviation and airline network thinking, then its near impossible for me to switch between airline short code and plain language. In essence the aviation short code becomes a second language.

On a related note, what annoys me is the recent propensity to name airports after someone. This also pushes me use airline shorthand. For example: its not Winnipeg Airport but rather YWG or Winnipeg James Richardson Armstrong International Airport. At least YYC and YEG have not succumbed to the desire to name the airport after someone famous.

Third important problem is that when LHR or LGW are used they are referring to the airport and not to the city. Otherwise LCY would have to be used to describe London UK. Also helps to use the airport code to distinguish separate city with the same name.

Finally what really gets my goat is that I have to add in airline short code to all my spell checker dictionaries in order for them to recognize LHR and ideally change lhr into LHR.

There is a heavy amount of dollars going into the Japan services right now. YVR-HND on ANA and YYZ-HND by AC. These new services add 300 seats per day onto the Canada - Japan market.

YYC-NRT will get a capacity boost once the 788 gets into AC fleet in final numbers. Also AC has firmed up most of their 787 orders as 789 fleet, so there is natural progression towards 333 type of aircraft.

The only downside to this message is that AC Sr Mgmt still wants the 333 out of the fleet at all costs. Unfortunately there will not be any opportunities to have network scheduling sneak any additional frequencies into network plan, a mainstay of the scheduling group since the days of Hollis Harris. For example some of the DC9s stuck around although they were replaced 1:1 with 319s. Additional examples include L1011s sticking around after the 762ERs came into the fleet; the L10s were not fully replaced until the 763s came onboard and the 333s were also ordered under the same pretense.

I admit to using #yql and #yyc on Twitter if I want a question answered or something because like it or not, people are following their airport code hashtags and I'm far more likely to get a response that way.

Outside of an aviation related venue, I do my very best to not use codes but one time while actually speaking I caught myself about to say "EWR"; in my mind I read it as a word sometimes. That would have gotten some weird looks.

Re: airport codes, apologies if this comes across as curt, but it's no different than yours truly browsing architectural threads and hearing the geeks there using all sorts of unfamiliar verbiage. Wtf would I know about architecture? I accept that I don't know jack squat about architecture, I'm interested in it but generally clueless, and am trying to learn things bit by bit. If you're passionate about aviation, it could be a little important for you to learn/know some of the basic airport codes. Truthfully, I'm a hell of a lot more familiar with ICAO and not IATA codes (ex:Heathrow: EGLL as opposed to LHR). I'm not picking on you but what you find 'annoying' is what the majority here find more concise and to the point. I don't think it's gonna change. I know I won't revert to typing full location names. (But I'm lazy, too, so no surprise there)

Yup!

For me when some says New York I say JFK? LGA? EWR?

Heck Los Angeles calls itself LAX...

For me it's my job and it is what I see when reading airport documents... Cyeg66 see's it and dreams it on a near daily basis...

My wife often looks at me with her head cocked when I speak in airport "lingo" as she calls... But it's pretty sweet when she drops "I'm going to SFO"... Kinda of arousing actually...

I'm not talking about YYC or PDX or ORD or ATL or LHR or others you'd expect people to know and you guys have to understand that. I can make it through most of the construction thread without a glossary but it is literally impossible for me to follow this one without one.

I don't want to shit in the punchbowl and appreciate that there are pilots and enthusiasts on here, but I've been seeing this for years on SSP and I had to pipe up.
