Remember the Old Colony Building at 407 S Dearborn getting a gut rehab for 204 units (http://chicago.curbed.com/archives/2013/...ed-for-gut-rehab-rental-conversion.php)?

Yep, it received building permits yesterday for $25+ M

I thought that was the Lasalle and Chicago building when I first saw it. Similar-looking.

Without any details provided I'll assume it's a "rentals for now but if the market gets much better we'll make it condos" project. Not bad. River North is lacking in good managed rental buildings since all the boom towers around there went condo. And it looks like good ground-level retail, which is always the thing I look for.

Great photo. The two SCB-designed Habitat towers here - Hubbard Place and (I think called) Kingsbury Plaza - look very nice from this angle....

(and thanks for digging up the LaSalle and Illinois proposal, Spyguy....looks very promising!)

Nice find, spyguy. I always felt that it would take a while before available plots were scarce enough that a developer would take on building on this awkward site, but that time has come, thankfully. The facade divisions on the tower and the height of that auxiliary building work nicely with the Vesemen building.

TRUMP sign coming to Trump. It's big but looks nice and adds a little more life to the river corridor

from the rendering in the article, it looks ridiculously oversized and tacky.

total garbage, but what can you expect from a garbage human being?

"the donald" hired a good archtiect to design him a pretty decent building, but he still found a way to 🞵🞵🞵🞵 it up somehow.

TRUMP Sign

Holy F$c&!!!!!! That is horrifying!!!!

If the city has any legal authority to stop this, they should, absent that, fingers and toes crossed that someone with some design sense can step in and radically revise this and make it at least much less offensive.....

Years ago, in a talk at the cultural center, Adrian Smith explained how we actually ended up with an attractive building (I suppose at that time, it was still under construction actually) developed by Donald Trump (Smith went around him and what he wanted as far as the overall design - I'm virtually certain Trump wanted a gold-colored tower - , but managed to not get fired, and Trump accepted what he came up with.....Adrian is a pretty tough guy, a strong persona, and also an architect that is a good businessman, so he managed to persuade Trump). Thank goodness for that at least. Ever since, it's been a comedy of tacky errors regarding design decisions: Note the replacement of the original fantastic landscaping with the preposterously bad 'Winnetka bush and hedge garden' it was replaced with, not to mention the fiberglass (instead of the obvious stainless steel called for) spire......

I've always thought it was a little unusual that he didn't have his name plastered all over that building. Visitors always see it and ask me what it is, and it strikes me as strange that I'd have to tell them it's a Trump property rather than it being immediately apparent like most things Trump. I don't really like the proposed signage, but it seemed inevitable.

“It would have been up already if not for the weather, We think it will be beautiful.” - Mr. Trump.

Can't imagine this looking very good....

Ha, I figured there wouldn't be many of you who would share my sentiment. I just appreciate the powerhouse feel that any corporate signage gives to a building and, cumulatively, a city. It was inevitable; so for all the tacky, Donald-like designs he could have gone with, this thin, stainless lettering is the best probable outcome.

I wouldn't be opposed to a smaller sign at the top of the building but this is like a ghetto nameplate belt.........

Sign looks fine to me. It could have been better, but it could have been worse. Seems like more people are complaining now than when Nuveen put their sign atop the green building on Wacker. Probably because Trump isn't a character that is like able. But as I always see on this board when it comes to property rights, when you own the property, you should have freedom to design it at will.

I recommend that trump use those giant hideous letters to cover the long vacant storefronts at the base of his tower

plenty of people complained about the Nuveen sign, including BK
http://articles.chicagotribune.com/2012-...igh-rise-signs-peter-strazzabosco-nuveen

if this was included in the original proposal i doubt it would have have been allowed, or at least on that scale. remember how many revisions the design got forced into? why after all those hard fought gains is everyone fine with tacky BS like this years down the line?

the approval process is the time for dialogue, not when the crane is hoisting the "T" into the air. do we not have ordinances for what is/isnt acceptable? if this is something deemed acceptable than maybe its time to revisit that document.

Thin? This sign is 20 foot tall and at least 125 feet wide. It's not the sign I object to as much as its size compared to it's height above the ground.

Well that and it's font, but there's not much to be done about corporate branding.
