Google Fiber coming to Salt Lake? These big "Mayor Announcements" a lot of times turns out to be a bust. But I can always hold out hope that this really could be somthing big like a major company moving to downtown with a tower.

I bet it has to do with the ground breaking of the new airport terminal out at SL International.

Don't believe that will start till Summer, and it begins with building the new Car Rental lots. Unless you know something I don't.

Let the guessing begin.

I'm guessing (hoping?) the announcement will be about the new airport. Full renderings, models, etc.

Hyatt hotel update. 2/16/14

If RWP is chosen as the sight for the CHH, it will make a huge impact from this angle.

Regent street demolition.

Last time was the Hive Pass announcement--that was pretty big in my opinion. I am hopeful this will be something big too.

nel OKs incentives for big Salt Lake hotel

BY MICHELLE L. PRICE
ASSOCIATED PRESS
SALT LAKE CITY -- A proposal that aims to attract the builder of a large, convention-sized hotel in downtown Salt Lake City has cleared its first hurdle at the Legislature.
A House committee voted 9-0 on Tuesday afternoon to approve the measure. It advances to the full House for consideration.
The proposal authorizes up to $75 million in public money to go toward tax rebates to a private developer building a hotel with 850 to 1,000 rooms.

thanks for the pics, Toysnoiz! I especially dig the third on down, with the red crane, the COB, and 99 West. Very cool!

This is my proposal for an Olympic Park: put the arch right back where it was during the games! During the games, the ten acre parking lot between North and South Temple, and 200 and 300 West was transformed into the medal's plaza, and really the heart of the the Olympic village. The space is still empty, still just filled with a giant parking lot, pending development by it's owner, the LDS Church. The planned development will be institutional and educational in nature. I'm sure it will be developed to very high standards, considering other LDS property downtown, and would probably contain a fair amount of green space or park space anyway. They could build a dedicated plaza for the arch and torch and etc. It would be a feather in their cap to host the state's Olympic treasures, and I am sure the LDS Church would be a generous partner for this, they can always be counted on to do good things for the city. I think the SE corner of the block would be a great place for an Olympic Park, and still plenty of space for a lovely urban campus for the Business College.

9-0 vote. Nice. Looks like everybody's finally on board here. Hopefully the next step doesn't take too long and it will pass also.

More hints:
1."The bill also requires that hotel be built with at least 500,000 square feet of convention and meeting space and be located within 1,000 feet of the Salt Palace Convention Center."
2."The hotel could cost about $335 million, something no developer will build without government help, McAdams has said."

With that much space, it may be to big for RWP as it currently is. Unless the meeting tomorrow is about the SLC Post Office being relocated.

I did know of 100,000 sq ft in meeting space but 400,000 sq ft in exhibit space may be to much for a simple span across 1st South or 2nd South to connect to the CCH. I can't wait to find out more about this.

If its success is in committee is any indication of how it will do in the house, where it failed last year, then it looks like we should have a new hotel soon.

The House Economic Development and Workforce Services Committee voted unanimously to advance the bill to the full House.

Three of the committee members voting for the bill Tuesday had last year opposed the measure, which again seeks state participation with Salt Lake City and Salt Lake County in providing a tax incentive that could entice a private-sector developer to build an 800 to 1,000-room megahotel adjacent to the Salt Palace Convention Center.

Last year’s bill, which had passed the Senate, failed by three votes in the House on the session’s final night.

Especially since one of last years apposing votes has already gone on record saying they are supporting the bill this year. Things are certainly looking good... keeping my fingers crossed.

And three of the nine who passed it unanimously out of committee today were against it last year. I think it is only a matter of time before it passes through both the house and senate.

The thing you have to remember when it comes to Utah politics and the government here is, hope for the best but expect the worst.
