I like when people leave them. That way we can keep reusing them rather than printing more than we really need.

I saw a documentary of 'behind the scenes with the royals' last year.

One former staffer told about being summoned by Prince Charles to find a missing letter from The Queen. Staffer had to stop what he was doing in the basement, make his way across the palace and up several stories to HRH's apartment, and quickly found the 'missing' letter was on the floor beside the desk HRH was using - apparently too close to the garbage can for HRH to reach for it and put it back on the desk himself.

Say it's 2035 and the Evergreen Line, the Broadway Extension, and the Surrey Extension are all done - what would be the next Skytrain line to be developed? A line down Granville? A Canada line extension? A fork of the Evergreen Line going further down the Lougheed Highway? A line connecting Brentwood Town Centre, BCIT, and Metrotown? A line into North Van (over a new Lions Gate Bridge?)?

I believe most of the refurbishment work to MKI train is invisible as they are related to the mechanical and electronic system.
The budget is quite limited. As long as the train can run safely for another 25 years, I am happy.
Let's hope this can prevent part of a train to fail and just break off again. According to Buzzer blog, this was exactly what happened last Wednesday to a stuck train at Main Street station. Let me guess. That probaby is an aged MKI train?

Quote:
BCRTC investigated the incident and found that a part used to connect the problem train to the power supply in the SkyTrain guideway (the tracks), failed, broke off and got lodged between the two power rails that supply the Skytrain with 650 volts DC of power. This prevented the train from continuing on its normal route. A failure such as this can occur if a train encounters a stray object in the guideway, but this particular incident was determined to be the result of a part that was defective or fatigued.

I think the next big priority would be to boost the capacity of the Expo line by lengthening all the station platforms. By the time all that other work is done the Expo line will be bursting at the seams.

I still think the next step after should be a Hastings Line to Willington Ave, which would eventually be extended down to Metrotown. Would service a major east-west corridor in Vancouver (including PNE access), as well as a major north-south corridor in Burnaby, including BCIT. You could also have a transfer point at or near the PNE where a future North Shore BRT could originate from.

It would also further alleviate pressure on Main St./Columbia as a transfer point from Evergreen to get downtown, as well as serve as a redundant system should a portion of the line fail.

After that I'd argue for extending the Evergreen line into Maple Ridge. From there it would be more capacity upgrades for the various lines and more rapid rail implementation for places like Abbotsford, Chilliwack, and even Hope.

I think after Broadway and Surrey we should focus on expanding bus service rather than more rapid transit. Maybe a North Shore line. It's hard to say now, because by the time we're finished Broadway and Surrey Greater Vancouver could look very different.

Short term once the funding problem has been dealt with Translink needs to get more buses on the road South of Fraser and at least one more B Line (Joyce Stn to U.B.C.) generally increase service hours for the system.

How about a link between south Burnaby/New West (Edmonds Stn?) and the Canada Line Marine Drive Station to provide a quick link to YVR from Surrey/Langley via the Expo Line & Surrey LRTs; and from Coquitlam/New West/Bby?

Otherwise, you'd have to ride up to Commercial, transfer to the UBC line, then on to the Canada Line @ Broadway/City Hall.

The Canada Line should be expanded north under the Burrard Inlet to reach the City Of North Vancouver. This is the only designated regional city centre (as identified by Metro Vancouver) west of Surrey that will lack rapid transit access after the completion of the Evergreen Line.

Doesn't the SeaBus count?

I agree. I can't see it being practical to run across the water there and it may face many logistical issues.

I could see eventually (many many years in the future) putting in an Streetcar/Light Rail system in North Van/West Van. The densification and growth seems to be centred around the sea bus terminal anyway.

That is sort of already being done. While not every station is being expanded. The major ones like Main, Broadway, Joyce, Metrotown, and I believe as well Scott Rd and Surrey Central stations are being expanded.

What about some of these bus lines, sure some priorities have changed, but as a starting point a rapid bus should build up demand for future rail infrastructure:

In case you didn't see them in the Evergreen Line thread, here are a couple of issues of BranchLine - a Canadian railway magazine with good background summary articles on the Millennium Line (January 2003) and Canada Line (December 2009):

Millennium Line article:

Canada Line article:

Unrelated, but I came across a funny at Bridgeport Exch yesterday where an articulated bus on layover (probably for a 620 service) was being signed as a community shuttle route!

...that doesn't exist

EDIT: I'm now aware that the C35 basically used to be the 177 (before it was completely cut off). Interesting how there was actually enough ridership demand on the corridor for a 10 min frequency previously.

Apparently starting tonight, power reail work is happening in the Dunsmuir Tunnel downtown, resulting in a single-track shuttle between Stadium and Waterfront.
Perhaps unrelated, but Waterfront inbound wasn't in use today, with all trains crossing over to the outbound track just before entering the station.

I know they had said the next phase of the power rail project was downtown, but it seems weird to me for them to start before having fully finished through New West. They still haven't done replacement on the outbound guideway between 22nd and New West.
