I have been reading the forums for awhile and decided I might as well sign up so I could actually contribute. I have always loved tall buildings and always get excited when a new tower is announced. Like many of you I'm always wishing the new annouced towers were even taller lol! I won't be posting as often as many here but will give an occassional opinion on current and upcoming projects.

I guess if there was a time during the construction process when it would be ideal for a disaster like this, it would be when it happened. The only primary loss is all the wood. The foundation is still good, and none of the more expensive exterior and interior materials (which I'm guessing were already purchased) were lost.
Any word on the cause of this fire??

They should just take down eat a burger.. I don't think the building is salvageable or even safe... If you go to the west side of the building you can clearly see how it's starting to slant in towards the back end... The northwest corner of the building is the worst.. It's even starting to crack away... You can even kind of tell that it sinking from the aerial shot... And there is a lot of standing water on the roof.. Some of it has to be leaking inside...

The city should go look at the place... they would probably condemn it... Maybe at that point they can force the owner to demolish it.

(Lennie Mahler | The Salt Lake Tribune) Firefighters battle a four-alarm fire near downtown Salt Lake City, Sunday, Feb. 9, 2014

Arson suspect arrested in huge Salt Lake City fire
By Michael McFall | The Salt Lake Tribune

Local and federal authorities say an arrest has been made in the Salt Lake City apartment fire that was visible for miles.

The suspect’s name was not immediately released. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives announced the arrest. It has been working with the Salt Lake City Fire Department.

The blaze Sunday at 550 E. 500 South did not cause any injuries. The apartment complex was under construction. Fire spread quickly through the exposed lumber and siding, creating a spectacular orange glow visible in the Salt Lake Valley darkness.

The Tribune will update this story as more information is available.

I have never understood the mindset of an arsonist. Good to see they have made an arrest.

Thanks for the pics ajiuO! It really puts it into perspective just how much work goes into the demolition of existing structures. I think it will be awhile before we actually see steel rising from the street. Hopefully between now and then they will decide to make 111 30 stories instead of 24 lol! (wishful thinking I know!)

If any tower is going to gain more floors it will be 145 State. Started out as 9 stories has since jumped to 20. Wouldn't mind having 145 as our new tallest.

It has been fun to watch the upward evolution of 145! Can't disagree that it would make for a very nice new tallest! I would like to see the CCH, 111, and 145 all set new benchmarks in the sky but now I'm just getting greedy lol! As is I see the CCH as having the biggest impact on the skyline depending on height and width of course followed by 111 with 145 bringing up the rear.

From my quick research on the interwebs, it looks like the arsonist was an electrician who worked on the site. Hm...

From this photo it looks like it's starting to cave in! Eat-a-burger has got to go. Especially with the PAC and 111 being built in that area.

Time to protest!

They should also try to figure out what's going on there before they build anything else there.. That isn't normal.

Speaking of apartment fires...

Here's a video from the SLC Fire Department from 1980 as they battle the Avalon Apartments fire. It killed 12 people - mostly children. Had never heard of this before (well before time, tho). It was the deadliest fire in state history.

FYI

UPDATE: The final numbers are in, and NBC’s Sochi Opening Ceremony 8PM -11PM coverage drew 31.7 million viewers, posting a 17.0 rating in households and a 8.7 rating among adults 18-49. That’s a slip of 3% in viewership, 2% in households and 7% in 18-49 from the Opening Ceremony of Vancouver 2010, which aired live. For a tape-delayed Winter Games opening ceremony, last night’s telecast from Sochi was the second most watched ever behind the Lillehammer opening festivities in 1994 (33.8 million) and ahead of Nagano 1998 (27.2 million), Albertville 1992 (24 million) and Torino 2006 (22.2 million)...

...The overall Winter Olympics champ is still the kickoff of the Salt Lake City games on February 8, 2002...That domestic Opening Ceremony had a 25.5/42 rating and pulled in 45.6 million viewers for NBC. Salt Lake still stands as the most watched OP ever Winter or Summer Olympics, coming out ahead of the 2012 London Games which had a U.S. audience of 40.7 million...

Top 10 Markets For Sochi XXII Olympic Winter Games Opening Ceremony
1) Minneapolis – 26.0/45
2) Salt Lake City – 24.4/43
3) Ft. Myers – 21.7/34
4) Chicago – 21.6/34
5) Boston - 21.5/37
6) Kansas City - 21.5/34
7) Milwaukee – 20.7/35
8) Denver – 20.5/36
9) Portland – 20.4/33
10) Buffalo - 20.4/33

aijuO, thanks for the pics. Yeah, that Eat A Burger is a hazard. Even fenced off, that places is jacked up. I wonder how you go about getting a building condemned?

...and I'm not sure if there is a problem with the site, or if it was 1) cheaply built to begin with and 2) neglected for nearly 20 years. That would be enough to do in a building like that, wouldn't it?

In any case. Wipe it out.

And the demolition is further along than it was even a week ago--nice to see the press buildings coming down on Regent Street. I'll have to try to make it up there this week sometime.
