Edmonton should concentrate on building dedicated inner-city bike lanes rather than saving money by creating suburban riding routes, Mayor Don Iveson says.

"I don't think there's a silver bullet for bike lanes, but I think there's a consensus emerging ... that we should focus our scarce resources where demand is highest," he said Wednesday...

Reasonable direction from council...the question is will they back it up in the Capital Budget. I don't believe these central routes have been left out because of ingorance of their importance...but because they are likely to require more robust ($$) infrastructure than other areas. When council asks for lots of length for as little $ as possible, cycle tracks in the core are hard to justify. Luckily this seemed fairly clearly communicated yesterday.

Exactly. They need the $$$ to back it up. Cycliung infrastructure is so under funded and under designed in our city, it is laughable. Sorry for sounding brash, but screw the suburbs if they don't want the infrastructure. We will gladly take it in our hood.

Yup. In this case I'm thankful to have Iveson and Sohi (who is really stepping up) over Mandel... just because Mandel's appraoch was generally to throw admin under the bus...even if they were following council direction. From the bits and peices I caught Iveson and Sohi seemed to try to make it clear that this direction was ultimately from council and although the implementation process could have better it's bit more complicated than making a scene about city staff. Their experience, especially over some of the new guys was really apparent in their comments - at least in the bits I was able to listen to.

Iveson was the Councillor that championed the original 10 year bike plan, so I would very much hope so.

"EDMONTON - Details are expected Thursday afternoon as the City of Edmonton hammers out a deal to consolidate many of its workers in a new downtown office tower the Katz Group will build in the arena district.

The optics are terrible though... lets hops some transparency aleviates those concerns

This is a project under the newly elected Mayor and Council. The Mayor is credible and can frame the decision the way it should be - and that the selection is the best for some key reasons. Best financial cost over the term being the number one imperative.
