Best that the streets in TD-WholeFoods-Joey'sPlace be named "Lansdowne Park Ave." and "Frank Clair St.," in recognition of the aspects of the history of the site that the City is allowing OSMUG to erase.
This is a great idea!

We should wait until the announcement is made but to rename Lansdowne Park with all its history would be a mistake that will invite unnecessary negativity. By all means, name the stadium complex whatever will generate the most revenue but not the whole park.

The city of Ottawa needs to respect its history and two locations, Lansdowne Park and Lebreton Flats are amongst some of the most important and cannot simply be erased to raise a bucket of cash and for political correctness.

My favourite part is how every single one of his reply tweets are EXACTLY the same.

The guy is a concrete desert loving hack.

The best thing that ever happened to this city was beating him and his FOL minions' in court.

Luckily Lansdowne was saved from them and there is nothing they can do about it now.

Scheme can mean project, it doesn't always have a negative connotation. However it's more used that way in British/Australian English, not as much in Canada.

I highly doubt they will rename the whole Lansdowne Park area TD Place. It must be the stadium only (and maybe the Civic Centre) that will be renamed.

That said, I still find it insulting that OSEG will be getting the sponsorship deal when the City actually paid for the renovation of the sports complex (along with the park, parking and whatever else). The only cash windfall that should go to OSEG is from the retail/office rents along with condo sales. Any revenue from the sports venues/park/Horticulture Building/Aberdeen Pavilion should go to the City.

I'm fine with the final result of the place in terms of look, retail/residential/office mix and the park, but in terms of a financial deal for the City, this whole thing is very disappointing.

Naming Rights Provisions under the LPP

Staff wish to highlight the extent of the naming rights provisions in favour of the City and
OSEG under the Lansdowne Partnership Plan.

The City shall have the naming rights in respect of the Urban Park which includes the
Aberdeen Pavilion, Aberdeen Square, Horticulture Building, West Court, East Court,
Skating Court, Great Porch, Great Lawn, The Hill, The Water Plaza, Civic Gardens,
Heirloom Orchard, Children’s Garden, South Berm/Block K interface and the Farmers’
Market.

OSEG shall have naming rights in respect of the retail and stadium components, subject
to compliance with the City’s policies and by-laws and applicable laws. Any name is
subject to the City’s approval, acting reasonably. There is no obligation for OSEG to
use the name “Lansdowne” provided that gateway signage on the site will bear the
name “Lansdowne”. Those parts of the stadium known as Frank Clair Stadium or the
Civic Centre (but not a part of Frank Clair Stadium or the Civic Centre) will not include
alcohol or the name of an alcoholic product or the name of a manufacturer or distributor
of alcoholic products.

Any proceeds from the naming rights are distributed according to the Waterfall under
the Closed System between the City and OSEG as set out in the Project Agreement.

OSEG doesn't get the sponsorship deal. Those revenues go into the waterfall and are distributed accordingly, ultimately reducing the risk to taxpayers. This was all contemplated from the outset of the project.

However, I don't see why they couldn't have gone with TD Landsowne Park. Or the Scotiabank Palladium. Or the Molson Forum...

Naming rights owned by the City seem pretty straight forward but not the OSEG rights. The hell does "Those parts of the stadium known as Frank Clair Stadium or the Civic Centre (but not a part of Frank Clair Stadium or the Civic Centre)" mean!? They can name the Civic and Frank Clair "Rickard's Field" as long as the temporary seating is not called "Rickard's Bleachers"?

What about "There is no obligation for OSEG to use the name “Lansdowne” provided that gateway signage on the site will bear the name “Lansdowne”." Does that mean they don't have to use "Lansdowne" for the Civic and Frank Clair? Where does it say they can rename the Lansdowne site?

Because it's too easy for the public to drop the first part and still be left with a meaningful place name (Lansdowne Park, the Palladium, the Forum) which isn't usually to an advertiser's liking :-)

I know it was part of the deal from the start, but I still think the City should get 100% of the naming rights revenue for the parts they own and paid for.

I agree, they should keep the original name along with the new sponsor name. The TD Civic Centre and the TD Frank Clair or Canadian Tire Palladium. It might also eliminate the possible confusion with TD Centre in Toronto or TD Garden in Boston. Do the best you can to make the name as original as possible.

That is pretty much it. If it were the Canadian Tire Palladium, most people would just call it the Palladium. No value for the sponsorship money. But as the Canadian Tire Centre, not many people will call it "The Centre."

Although I'm sure there are people around here who still call the place the Palladium. Some even on principle.

So my read on that is:

The entire place is Lansdowne
OSEG does not get to name the urban park portion
They can name the retail, stadium arena as they wish provided they don't name them after alcohol or tobacco.

The portion in brackets simply allows for the say the Labatt beer party suite within the stadium provided the entire stadium is not named say Labatt field.

Sun story:

http://www.ottawasun.com/2014/01/07/frank-clair-stadium-civic-centre-to-become-td-place

Quote:
The Ottawa Sports and Entertainment Group is taking naming rights to Lansdowne Park all the way to the bank.

It was officially announced Tuesday that TD Bank Group has agreed to a long-term deal, believed to be more than 10 years at more than $1 million per year, to be the naming rights sponsor of the stadium and arena -- to be called TD Place.

The door is not being slammed in the face of legendary Rough Riders coach Frank Clair, whose name was on the football stadium for years. A monument will be erected in his honour. Design concepts for the monument will be developed in collaboration with Clair's daughter Robin.

"I'm delighted that OSEG and TD respect the historical significance of Lansdowne Park and my father's contribution to writing it through his football legacy," said Robin Clair Mason.

The agreement also makes TD the official bank of OSEG's three sports franchises, the Ottawa RedBlacks (CFL), Ottawa Fury FC (NASL) and the Ottawa 67's (OHL).

"Through this agreement we are demonstrating our commitment to Ottawa," said Chris Stamper, senior vice-president of corporate marketing for TD Bank Group. "We're proud to help revitalize an area for the community to live, play and grow, and for the entire city to enjoy. We look forward to providing fans a place where they can support their teams and also share in our love of music."

TD will open a new state-of-the-art retail branch and install ATMs.

"This agreement aligns TD with the excitement of our games, the passion of our fan-base and our vision to transform Lansdowne Park into Ottawa's most popular destination for almost anything that's worth doing," said OSEG chairman Roger Greenberg.

"TD Place, with its natural wood surface rising organically from parkland, speaks to Ottawa's heritage as a city founded by the lumber industry and its future as a city where great things are possible. I'm delighted that TD shares our vision for a vibrant future at Lansdowne Park."

"This a great day for sports fans and all residents of our city," said Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson. "TD is a top Canadian brand and its alignment with OSEG is a vote of confidence in the long-term success of the Lansdowne Partnership Plan and the vibrancy of the City of Ottawa. OSEG has partnered with a rock-solid Canadian success story.
All the way to the bank...get it??
