When one partner dies, the law decides that the sister or mother, or other relative is the heir to all of their worldly goods and not the other partner.
When they go to the mortuary to bury their loved one, they won't even talk to you, and ask for the next of kin.
It goes on and on. There are hundreds of examples I could give why gay people need marriage equality.
Civil marriage is not just about '$.' There needs to be a legal framework to decide a multitude of issues. That's why civil marriage was first created by the Jusitinian lawyers in ancient Rome. Who inherits the house. Who can visit in the hospital. Who can make decisions on your behalf if you are incapacitated. etc.
Yes and that legal framework should not be exclusive to married people.. That is my whole point... I should be able to appoint my best friend as my next of kin if I want to... As I stated... We need a legal framework for people to be leggaly related by choice.. But that framework should not be tied specifically to marriage... Because even if it's redefined to include gay people... It does not include people who are single and who desire to have plural marriages..

Do you think that it's fair to exclude single people and people who desire plural marriages??

Don't take this the wrong way.. Because I'm truly not trying to be mean or anything..

But if Comrade, Steiner, and myself were not debating politics.. Do you think that new development news would start pouring in?? It's 11:00 PM on Sunday night.. There isn't much going on.. We're just here being debatative people..

If there's something interesting going on feel free to shift the conversation.. Tomorrow is Monday morning I doubt we will still be discussing this then..

Sure I guess it pollutes the form a little bit... But I can usually tell in the first 2 to 3 words of a post if it something I want to read or not...

Sorry if it's if we're stressing you out.. Just blow off trivial stuff you'll be happier... It's all good yo!!

I do wish we could have the Utah politics thread back though... We have a lot of politically minded people around here :/

Maybe some people were taking it personally.. I can debate anything all day without taking it personal.. I still like everyone on here :-)

Oh well sorry :/

I love this City and its Skyline. Can't wait to see 111, and the Final Residential tower of City Creek (Cascade) go in.

You're welcome. It's not my picture, but I love it. Just think how awesome in 30 years the skyline is going to be.

This is a really great photo. Downtown looks great, but I especially love the juxtaposition of the downtown buildings with the rolling hills behind them.

Iv always hated the idea of expanding the salt palace over 200 west and expanding the tunnle.. I think it would be horrible to walk through.

But what if.. You could drive under the salt palace.. But walk over it.. We have done it with the confrance center.. We have done it with the library... Why not the salt palace??

The salt palace has the horrible effect of deviding things.. But what if an expanssion was desighned so that there was public acsessable space on top of it witch could be acsessed from each respective street and side. There could be grass, trees, fountains, and maybe even small shops.. It would be like a second level portion of the city.. Iv never been a fan of RWP for the hotell.. But if you redeveloped the whole block and tied it in to somthing cool like this.. It might work... Why does sll of our walkable area have to be at strert level?? We could do somthing really cool..

Just an idea

I have to disagree with the redevelopment of the entire RWP block for the CCH to locate there. I think the RWP space is ideal for redevelopment, while leaving the tower, Japan Town and the apartments on the SW corner of the block all in tack. Yes there is some logistical things that would need to be addressed with 200 W and accessing the tower and 100 S, but I think those can be addressed. I'd ideally like to see the expo space connect from the existing Salt Palace along the 200 S face, across 200 W. A tall hotel on the NW corner of 2nd and 2nd with the convention space taking up the majority of the RWP lot. I would like to see either a small street or a nice pedestrian access put through, north to south, from 200 S to 100 S, just east of the existing apartments on the block. The design could enhance the Japan Town feel and could bring more attention to Japan Town with access from 200 S.

The final piece of the block for me would be another hotel, with some substantial height, on the NW corner of the block.

I don't think the current residential tower would necessarily detract from a CCH tower. I like old and new, ugly and pretty co-existing in a city. I think it shows the cities growth over a long period of time.

Developers, Salt Lake City clash over impact fees, demolition and parking rules
I agree that maybe the impact fees need to be readdressed and maybe a ramping up approach would have been a better way to increase them, rather than a 400%+ just all at once.

I do however agree 100% with the city's policy on building demolition. I don't want to hear the owners of Arrow Press Square of the Yard Stick complaining that they can't demolish their buildings. I approached each of those owners over 6 years ago about what it would take to purchase their properties, and both owners were adamant that they weren't interested in selling. My guess is that the Yard Stick owner is simply using the property as a tax write off, due to loosing money on the building. The Arrow Press Square owners stated that they were holding out hope that their site would be selected for a CCH. If either of these owners were fully interested in redeveloping their property they wouldn't simply be sitting on their thumbs complaining that they can't tear them down because of the city's rules.

Someone mentioned earlier that they believed that some of the buildings west and southwest of the Salt Palace cannot be demolished because of some sort of protection. None of the buildings, including those in Japan Town are landmark sites and none have protection from demolition from the city's standpoint.

Regarding the SL Tribune article from yesterday developers can be such whiners! I

The developer quoted most often in that article owns some of the most run down, disgusting buildings in downtown SLC and they weren't that bad when he purchased them. He purposefully lets these buildings rot. I have no sympathy for the man. If he wants to make some money then he should either renovate the structure or tear it down and develop something on the site. There are few limits placed upon development except that it cannot be a surface parking lot.

Also the impact fees jumped so much because they hadn't been reviewed in a very long time. Most suburban communities in the area actually have much higher impact fees, especially for commercial construction. Impact fees are a part of development and frankly new development should be paying for their impact to the community rather than forcing existing residents and land owners to bear that specific burden.

completely agree.

On an unrelated note, I heard today that the city is planning on installing some sort of protected bike lane on Broadway and another on 200 West. From the sound of it the final design wasn't finished, but they're shooting for installation in summer/fall.
