Approving these towers and they will be built exactly as proposed but by rejecting them will lead to three more King Blue towers is too common a misconception on these forums. We should know better that there are no guarantees on the design.

I spefically brought up King Blue. A Mirvish partnership proposed the L'Avenue tower and later the KPMB stacked boxes. He sold the site to the Easton Group after rezoning. Look at what we are getting now.

Okay, so the numer I checked it against was a little old, but the GTHA is definitely not over 7 million (the GTA at 6.2 puts the GTHA at 6.7 or so since the GTA is already stealing .2 from the H). Still that was also one of the lower London estimates I've seen based off of the more messy nature of determining old world urban areas.

Typical passive - aggressive Toronto. With the deflection to some "super committee" , council shows it dosn't have the stones to take on two Toronto icons like this.

Is there a reason why no one has ever built anything that surpassed the First Canadian Place in height? I think the Trump building was suppose to do just that until they scaled it back a bit.

Giannone Petricone is doing the larger 2 towers at the north end of the site. Raw are designing 2 midrises on the same site.

This is the Guvernment site we're talking about

Oh yeah I think I'd heard that. GP does some decent modernist stuff and RAW is really gettting their groove on with the midrises. So I've got hope still.

So you expect Toronto to compete with cities 2-3 times it's size, which have more money and more need for highrises and are national capitals? Toronto is not declining, the rest of the world is just rising and that's a good thing.
Toronto might not have buildings as tall as Moscow or London, but it certainly has far more tall towers than either city. If the cut-off point is set to 150 metres (Built and U/C), Toronto has 55, Moscow has 34, London has 21, and Paris has 16. This shows Toronto having a far more dense core of tall towers, and eventually a few supertalls will rise out of it. I'm not even sure why Paris would have been mentioned, with its grand total of 2 towers over 200 metres...

I do like the mid-rise portion of the development I must say

Although not the nation's capital, Toronto is the financial capital of Canada.
Additionally, as a percentage of the country's total population, more people live in the GTA than in London. From what I recall the figure is about 16% for the GTA compared to 12% for London. Not a huge difference, but one that puts them on a par.
I agree that there is more money in the likes of London and Paris, but I wouldn't say that was grounds for Toronto not needing to build higher.

At least fire off a hint. Is it good news, or the usual?

I haven't been able to find the link, but I do recall reading years ago that when ScotiaPlaza was being designed, one of the plans was for something taller than FCP, but in the end they went with looks and design more than height.
I will have to try and find where I read this, I believe it was in some tourist book I bought years ago that is probably in storage in my parents' attic...

Hmm, interesting, I've never heard that. Perhaps there's a render of it?

I admit my tastes in modern skyscraper architecture are quite conservative, but I'm glad none of that junk was built in Toronto, save for the Moscow cluster. That twirly ice-cream-cone-shaped thing in London is an atrocity, imo.

Recent times, market conditions aren't there to support a new commercial tower of this size but, also shadowing guidlines and a built out core severely limit the redevelopment opportunities available. Before that, rumour has it FCP was zoned to be the tallest in the city.
