Salt Lake City - Sugar House Updates

Wilmington Flats

VCBO ARCHITECTURE...http://www.vcbo.com/wilmington-flats.html
The Wilmington Avenue project brought together a diverse group of stakeholders with a vested interest in developing and designing an urban garden destination in the heart of the funky Sugar House business community. This small parcel is nestled among an interesting mix of unique businesses, urban condominium dwellers, and satellite Westminster College teaching and living spaces, all abutting a protected riparian stream corridor called Hidden Hollow. The challenge and goal of the Salt Lake Redevelopment Agency for this property was to protect and enhance the riparian corridor, energize this unique small business sector of the Sugar House community, create a public plaza gathering venue suitable for concerts, farmer’s markets, other community uses, and provide affordable housing units in a community that is lacking in that regard. The plaza is a central connector that encourages foot traffic to public transportation, the nearby Sugar House Park, local businesses, Hidden Hollow, and the Westminster College campus auxiliary spaces.

I guess 111 S Main got a serious redesign?

NO longer a 2 story lobby, and a 2 story Parapet with Steel work crowns the top, but no longer that sawtooth glass facade they decided just ordinary windows. hmmm

The Latest 111 South Main tower renderings

This is the latest renderings of the 111 Main tower, I really like the how the lobby has been updated, it looks like a pedestal and the concrete perimeter columns have been removed from the lobby and replaced with multiple slender steel columns, its more elegant and unique. I like this so much better then the previous design, which looked cheesy and didn't fit in with the Theater design in my opinion.

LDS Church's Provo MTC will expand south into BYU campus

Current Mission Training Center

By Tad Walch, Deseret News

http://m.deseretnews.com/article/8655906...html?ref=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.google.com%2F

PROVO — The expansion in the number of LDS missionaries over the past year will be met with an expansion of the church's flagship missionary training center in Provo.

“The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has announced plans to expand the Provo Missionary Training Center to the south of the existing MTC campus where the BYU Laundry Building and the Auxiliary Maintenance Building are currently located," church spokesman Cody Craynor said Wednesday night.

"Design of the expansion is ongoing and further details will be provided in neighborhood meetings and in announcements in the coming months.”

To make room for new laundry and auxiliary buildings across the street from where they are now, BYU will remove one quad of apartments in its Wymount Terrace married-student housing complex, university spokeswoman Carri Jenkins said...

Roof, tower for Provo City Center Temple add to downtown buzz

Work continues on transforming the old Provo Tabernacle into an LDS temple Monday, Nov. 25, 2013. (Scott G Winterton, Deseret News)

By Tad Walch - Deseret News

http://www.deseretnews.com/article/86559...-Center-Temple-add-to-downtown-buzz.html

PROVO — It's lunch hour on a late-November afternoon, and business is brisk at Rocco's Tacos and Wing Wagon in a little nook of downtown Provo.

Diners at outdoor tables are talking and laughing, enjoying the weak-but-welcome fall sunlight and the warm food in their plastic trays.

Every so often one of them looks across the street to check on the latest signs of obvious progress at the Provo City Center Temple as construction workers in hard hats and yellow vests — just like the men at one of Rocco's tables — add to the first pieces of the roof and to the tower that eventually will hold the Angel Moroni statue.

The resurrection of the burned-out Provo Tabernacle as a temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is a powerful factor among many driving a surprising regeneration of Provo's downtown that includes new apartments, restaurants, music, arts and more.

"This is a totally different city than I remember as a kid," says Rocco's owner C.J. Gandolph, who is 25. "It's not the same Provo I knew growing up."...

An earlier artist's rendering of the Provo City Center Temple shows University Avenue in the foreground and 100 South to the left side of the temple. That part of 100 South is now closed. A parking garage will extend under that area, which will be green space, as in the newer rendering. (LDS Church)

Across Center Street to the north of the Provo City Center Temple site, a new red facade went up this week above the old, iconic Los Hermanos location that is now a wedding reception center. Los Hermanos moved a block east three years ago. (Tad Walch, Deseret News)

...Just as with City Creek, high-end apartments are expected, just a few feet east of Rocco's Tacos. Named "63 East," the project will reach six stories, with retail shops on the first floor and luxury apartments with a temple view above.

A few blocks west on Center Street, 150 high-density downtown apartments have been announced, with more new space for shops and offices.

"The whole area's transforming," said Erik Winger, an employee at Nu Skin, the temple's next-door neighbor. Nu Skin is engaged in its own major construction project on Center Street, the $100 million Innovation Center, which will add more of the company's workers to the downtown area...

finalized but for the most part, this is what it will be for phase 1. Phase
2 will add the additional concourse to the north connected with tunnels
and automated people mover train. There is also space reserved for a
large airport hotel built adjacent to the terminal in phase 2.

As for other SLC news, the new Alaska routes have been mentioned.
Alaska has moved to terminal 1 and operates out of concourse A.
Previously they had used a Delta gate and check-in was in terminal 2.
Alaska could indeed add more routes but they are limited on gate space.
SLC-Hawaii nonstop on Alaska is not likely right now because they don't
have the aircraft with the needed range and performance to make it
nonstop from SLC. There is enough demand, but it will have to be
one-stop via other cities. Mexico could happen, we'll see.

Other new routes include Delta non-stop to Raleigh/Durham, NC
which started today. SkyWest (Delta Connection) was awarded essential
air service grants from the federal government to start new flights from
SLC to Moab and Vernal beginning in March. There will be two flights a
day to each city (1 on Sat/Sun). This service will replace existing service
from Vernal to Denver and Moab to Denver on Great Lakes Airlines.
The flights to Vernal and Moab will be operated with 30 seat Embraer
Brasilia aircraft.

The Delta/Alaska competition is heating up and it will be interesting to
see what Delta does to protect its turf.

I like that they're going to be using a lot of warm natural materials to finish the interiors. I'll take woods and natural stone etc. over too much of the white vinyl and plastic any day.
