Except lake street…

I quite like the tower otherwise though. I am hoping the wavy fins on to curtain wall will look better in person than in lo-res renders.

Lee Bey reported that Perkins+Will won the commission for NW medical's Prentice replacement. Whether or not they choose to heed SOAR's advice for a more 'iconic' design remains to be seen.

Well, P+W was the best out of the three IMO (I know others will disagree but the Aalto-ish design is cool).

Between 150 N. Riverside and River Point, Lake Street can't get no love. At least 150 N will terrace their blank wall in a series of landscaped steps to soften the impact. Also: I miss fountains. Why did office developers stop building fountains in their plazas?

Northwestern taps firm to build on old Prentice site
'Progressively modern' research facility replaces Goldberg classic

By Ellen Jean Hirst and Patrick Svitek, Chicago Tribune reporters
December 8, 2013

Quote:
A plan that combines "elegant design and functionality" was chosen by Northwestern University as the winner in a competition for a new biomedical research building on the Streeterville site of the old Prentice Women's Hospital.

The location at 333 E. Superior St. is notable as much for what came down as for what is going up. The distinctive hospital was designed in the 1970s by Chicago architect Bertrand Goldberg, best known for Marina City, and its demolition by Northwestern has been roundly criticized.

I think Lake St downtown is generally accepted as a utilitarian street. If anyone wants to attempt to make it nicer or operate a fast food place or something, more power to them. But IMO it's like a decorating an alley or something. Lake Street is actually cool for what it is. A gloomy dark street with L trains rattling overhead.

Ugh thank God. Who would disagree with you? It was clearly the best—no contest.

The slideshow displayed at the public meeting is available for viewing here

36 floors, but no 13th; so 35 floors total.
1 floor underground
825,000 sq ft of office space
10,000 sq ft retail (includes a restaurant on Randolph St)
only 34 parking spaces- all underground (current surface lot has 150)

We have a official height as well: 551'-0" to top (from elevation drawings)

I'm glad these office proposals on parking lots are actually reducing the supply of parking downtown, and even the new spaces are usually not open to the public so they are all a win for public transit and urbanity generally. The residential towers do increase the overall supply typically, but if there's no accessory parking it's still a decline in the number of public spaces.

We talked earlier about downtown running out of developable sites, but the parking garages of the mid to late 20th century will become prime targets in the future.

Hancock Center considers new way to look down

Willis Tower, already knocked from its perch as the Western Hemisphere's tallest building by New York's One World Trade Center, soon could face a new challenge from within its own city.

The owner of the observatory in the John Hancock Center on North Michigan Avenue is planning a tourist experience called the “Tilt” that would rival the Ledge, the popular and profitable glass-floor balconies on Willis' 103rd floor, according to sources familiar with the proposal…

Crains Story
Gensler is doing the work for the attraction, as well as overhauling the interiors and signage. This attraction is much further down the path than the article sort of hints at. Formal announcements are coming shortly and the attraction should be built and running early this spring.

Nope nope nope, messing with the Sears exterior is one thing, but any sort of projection from the JHC will ruin the purity of the tapering design. I am not OK with this. We really need to push to get some of these buildings landmarked. JHC is one of the best buildings ever built IMO and we can't afford to let it be mutilated. I think I heard it said before like this: JHC is to structural expressionism as the Chrysler building is to Art Deco. It's not the biggest or tallest example, but it's damn big and more or less the perfect incarnation of the style.

^Big Bucks rule, if money can be made, it will be made...

In going public this year, New York's iconic Empire State Building disclosed that more than $92 million, or just over 40 percent of its annual revenue, is generated by its observation decks. The world's most visited spire, the Eiffel Tower, with more than 7 million tickets sold per year, likely brings in considerably more, Mr. Thomas says.

He estimates Willis Tower's annual revenue at more than $25 million in ticket sales alone, while Hancock likely brings in more than $10 million.
