It still looks awkward, no doubt. The window wall definitely helps, so it's a big step up.. but that's easy when the bar is set so low

More like cue the impossible to please snobs. This site has issues. This building addresses those issues and looks good while doing it. You do realize that the "prominence" of this corner will be minimized once increased development makes every intersection prominent? Just once, couldn't anyone be enthusiastic about a project? This is one of about one thousand lots available for development...

I don't know what to think...my first impression is "awkward"...but realize the tracks run below so the podium needs to be pulled forward as it will not or can't support a tower. Perhaps it is the colour palette of materials that differ from tower to podium that give me the awkward feeling...on the other hand it creates the illusion that it is 2 separate buildings (which it will be during construction). That visual distinction may be what they want to create. WhyteKnight could play with this...but has not posted since July. I hope he is around and well??

So is George saying that SSP and C2E has influenced his thinking on the re-designs?

Exactly, wouldn't be out of place in Calgary, and is definitely better than the empty lot that is there now.

Besides, the blue glazing will nicely match the Professional Building kitty-corner

All these intersections have the potential to be big flashy prominent intersections. All I was saying is that this building is appropriate for the limitations of the site and that there are many other sites better suited to big beautiful skyscrapers... Oh and also, that people on here just like to complain...

Which is very smart IMO. If you have a product to sell why not study what people think, and give them something they like.

Wow some of you guys are a little too touchy

It's a decent development, and much better than the previous proposal, and is suitable for the area

But it's no masterpiece, and constrictions considered it still looks awkward. Deal with it.

^ Exactly. It's "safe." Nothing groundbreaking, not pushing any limits or boundaries, won't win any architectural accolades, etc. I guess that's what we've come to expect now, and certainly that's a step up from being happy for the turds we've already had foisted on us or have nearly missed having foisted on us. At some point though, I hope we start pushing some boundaries and start expecting a higher level of design as the norm. I was hoping this building would do that based on some of the excitement a few members had when talking about the new design, but hey, it's marginally better so we should all be happy someone wants to develop here in Edmonton, right?

^ i don't think any boundaries are being pushed here, because likely it'll get built and packaged off with the other one and sold. It's no secret that they've been trying to sell off the south complex for some time

The emails and correspondence I have sent to numerous offices within the city and the developer...can’t even write their name lol. Too many peoples surprize, this course of action does hold water and reinforces the saying "The Squeaky Wheel gets the Grease"

I do like the new proposal....

Not every project is intended to 'win accolades' or 'push the boundaries' of design or architecture. All I ask for is a good project that helps strengthen the architecture and urban form of the street, block, and neighbourhood. And I believe this design achieves that.

@240, most buildings eventually are sold. That doesn't necessarily mean the developer will design and build a 'meh' project.
