On March 5th of this year the daily high temperature at the airport was minus 4 degrees and the overnight low was minus 20. Would it be wise to spray water over an aeroplane?

^Not to worry. They'll fill the water cannon truck with deicing fluid.

Bigtime,

If this is tradition for "when a new airline enters the market", or "for a pilot on his retirement flight", I was wondering why it was done here. Tuffy's post implied that this wasn't a first flight for Air France to CUN.

It seems as though this instance was because it was the first A380 at CUN. That's why I asked the follow-up question. I appreciate your answers.

Either way, I've seen an A380 at LAX, parked beside a dinky 747. Can't wait to be on one someday!

AF flies to CUN on a scheduled basis but normally uses the 777-300 and occasionally the 747-400 on the route.

This was a "special" one off scheduled flight using the A380.

It also marked the first scheduled visit of a A380 to any Latin American city.

It was greeted with the spray as we normally do (as do most airports) when a new airline or special visitor arrives.

This maybe the first visit but not the last as the airline has expressed a interest in operating the type here occasionally in the future as a special service to its passengers.

It will also likely be deployed on the CDG-MEX route as soon as next summer as the regular scheduled aircraft.

^ Does CUN have the gates required for an A380?

The video only showed the one gate for the upper section - I could have been mistaken

No at the moment there are no double gates fully equipped to handle the A380 at CUN.

Plans call for at least one gate to become equipped when plans move ahead for the next new terminal.

I figured out why they gave the water canon salute. CUN fire staff have seen YouTube videos of AF's fleet and their filthy condition (esp. A340's) and are only trying to help actually keep their airplanes clean.

That is a matter of perspective. The last tenant was kicked out yesterday. But if somebody wanted to do touch and goes tomorrow they could.

Ha!

Agreed they can be pretty dirty looking machines!

My vote for dirtiest looking machines we see in CUN still goes to Transaero's 772's and 744's.

If they aren't dirty they seem to have a lot of unmatching parts put on the aircraft...

And I just read online today that a few CF-18's will be the last jets to use the Airfield...

Should get nice and loud later today for the YEG folks as I assume they will not be terribly quiet on departure and the following fly-by!

Happy trails to CYXD. She was once our jewel (50 years ago) but even an aging girl needs to be enterré at some point. Thx for the memories. Too bad you couldn't be kept solely as a VFR 12/30 strip airfield. (à la São Paulo Marte) And now her lights have already been turned off for a final time, confined to history pages.

While I continue to believe that redeveloping an airport that could have easily become the epicentre of all Northern energy projects into low-rise suburban condos is stupid. There are some very interesting proposals flying around from the disgruntled, wealthy and politically connected.

Mexican tour operator will be once again offering a few charter flights (as they did a few years ago) for Mexican tourists travelling to Alberta.

The flights will be operated by AeroMexico starting in July from Mexico City and will operate a total of 4 flights to both Edmonton and Calgary right into August.

The best part?

The flights will utilize the 787!

The last series in 2008 utilized the 757-200...

Looks like these will be the first Dreamliner visits to Alberta!

I expect these will be announced fairly soon by Travel Alberta as they are also involved once again.

The City has an approved plan for Blatchford that has wide public support and council is proceeding on that basis. Schemers, dreamers and political pundits need not apply.
