They were founded around the same time, but the populations grew quite differently. Hamilton's been in the top 10 since the country started, Winnipeg showed up in 1891. Also interesting, in 1891 Quebec had 63k, Hamilton 49k, and Winnipeg 26k, then just twenty years later Winnipeg sat at 136k, Hamilton 82k, and Quebec 78k. A dramatic reversal of relative sizes.
