No freaking kidding. This one has me scratching my head, in terms of ZERO media focus.

I grew up around drugs and alcohol. Much of my youth and early adult years were heavily immersed in the culture. I know how people normally "progress", I know what typically works as a "gateway drug". I've seen people from all walks of life go from teetotaler to complete — addict, and damn near everything in between. There are certain "lines" (no pun intended) that people cross, and they tend to follow similar patterns.

I've never, EVER met someone who, while drunk, just randomly takes a hit off a crack pipe. It's so inconceivable that it borders on the absurd. His admission of crack smoking, "during one of my drunken stupors", may quite possibly be the stupidest thing I've ever heard a politician say. And I'm cynical to the bone.

I do actually know a few people who have done crack once, but yeah this is far, far from the norm. And in their case they had a weird obsession with trying almost every drug except heroin once... so yeah.

The media has tip-toed around this before as Ford's office was quick to banish anyone from interviews/questions if they didn't like what was being asked. But from acquaintances in media-related jobs there are many stories of the Ford brothers doing lines of coke in bars. St Paddy's last year comes to mind - it's apparently the real reason he got kicked out of Bier Market (though nobody wants to go on the record - yet).

Also as an aside I'm surprised people aren't more angry about the whole St Paddy's 2012 incident. Nothing wrong with getting wasted on the streets once in awhile, but when that starts with drinking at city hall (and allegedly wanting to light a joint in his office) it's no longer "on your own time". Then stumbling back to city hall and walking around with a half-empty bottle of brandy at 2:30am and yelling at staffers.

Ford recently went apoplectic about a picture of a City of Toronto employee with their head on their desk appearing to be asleep (with no proof). Saying he should be fired immediately etc. If any other staff member did what Ford did he would be calling for their head. But instead its "I'll try and not get so drunk in the future - but no promises". That's one of the things that angers me more than the crack. And you know, the constant lies.

My American and European friends have always told me that there's never any interesting news coming from Canada.

I really have to thank Rob Ford for changing this!

This guy belongs in Whogivesafuck, Nebraska with this garbage...

Looks like someone else is hitting the crack pipe. This is a guy I legitimately wouldn't feel bad if he got run over by a streetcar. Actually that would be vindication. Keep in mind the councillors who brought forward the motion to restrict Ford's powers came from WILLOWDALE, aka the suburbs.

Bingo.

Plenty of people have only tried things, even crack. But you don't just go from a lifelong heavy drinker (and that's it) to suddenly taking a hit off a crack pipe for kicks.

Ford implemented random drug testing on safety-critical TTC employees in 2011.

I wouldn't mind cleaning house in city council; and fully realize more than just Ford would be picked up by it.

Has that seen the Supreme Court yet? Every random drug test that is challenged in this country is ruled illegal (at least as far as I've been able to find out). The O&G sector keeps bumping up against this one.

On that note - how can this be a "leftist" coup? Isn't the drug issue something where the "left" is typically accepting of it, and the "right" condemns it fully? So if people are coming down on Ford for smoking crack, aren't they actually being very right-wing?

Did anyone else notice the loud guffaws from the media horde when he ended his press briefing with "God bless the people of Toronto"?

No, but I did hear a "Mayor Ford, are you high on crack right now?" from someone yesterday. I just about fell off my chair laughing. I wish I was a journalist sometimes.

Uggh, it has gone from funny to infuriating. Is there a precedent for having a mayor forcibly removed from office?

^Can't be done unless he's convicted of a crime. Late last year he was found guilty of a conflict of interest and was on the verge of being tossed out of office. The judgment was deemed legally sound by legal scholars, but was overturned by the appeals court a couple of weeks later.

What happens if a politician goes batshit insane? Starts spouting off about how the aliens are coming to abduct Torontonians, and begins using whatever mayoral powers exist to start doing all sorts of insane things?

What if he starts constantly spouting off things that are borderline, but not legally defined as, hate speech?

I'm not being rhetorical, either. I can think of a lot further down the crazy train here, before getting into the realm of illegal. Are we seriously stuck with politicians, once elected, no matter what they do, period? So long as it's not illegal?

You know how indignation is the vice that characterizes our age, that it's the one thing that people indulge in without feeling guilty? How nothing can be so satisfying as feeling indignant at people?

Well, even that has its limits. Even Jon Stewart has stepped back from the jokes to suggest that Ford needs help. I know I myself have had enough of this — show. It has to end.

I mean...doesn't it?
