That is exactly the reason why it was turfed by the CRB. There is sufficient approved lands to accommodate residential development within the County for the foreseeable future and more could not be justified given the population growth projections.

Fort McMurray Airport designated official port of entry into Canada. I wonder what impact this will have on YEG and YYC. Fort Mac peoples must be flying to either Edmonton or Calgary now to go to Chicago and Denver...so it will mean loss of passenger traffic - but who is hit harder - YYC or YEG?? As for LV I do not see that is much of an impact.

"The former head of the Edmonton International Airport Authority said it is also likely that Fort McMurray will land service to Chicago through United Airlines, which initiated daily flights from Denver to the northern airport this summer.

“Our No. 1 destination is Las Vegas,” Clements said. “We have the numbers and know we can support the service.”

Last thoughts: article says he is in negotiation with 3 airlines? WHO??? - I assume this means inducements. Nice to have $$ from the Regional Municipality of WB to self serve your community - this points to the problem of how underfunded Edmonton is and gets screwed by Strathcona Country, St, Alberta, Sturgeon and Leduc County.

I'm not a fan of regional planning, so lets just not go down the road. But at the end of the day the only proposal that would have made Villeneuve a workable alternative in an actionable time frame was shot down. With Sturgeon out of the running that leaves the ERAA and their less than stellar track record out there.

I think the impact will be a lot greater on the fly-in, fly-out operations than commercial service and ultimately they would want to bypass YMM too.

One of the oilsands operators is lobbying for CBSA to pre-clear their passengers at the gate or on the tarmac in the US so they can fly directly to the protect bypassing YYC/YEG and YMM.

Airport works on new development
First phase of project expected to include hotels, offices, shops

Gordon Kent
Edmonton Journal

Thursday, October 31, 2013

Excavators and trucks are digging up property beside the Edmonton International Airport to prepare for a big new office, shopping and hotel development. Crews began last year clearing land for the first phase of the project, a 32-hectare site at the southwest corner of Airport Road and the Queen Elizabeth 2 Highway expected to contain hotels, restaurants, offices, shops and entertainment.

"It's about developing land-use plans that allow Edmonton and the region to benefit from becoming a more attractive hub," Myron Keehn, EIA's vice-president of commercial development, said Wednesday...

Oh, FFS, just focus on getting flights to real destinations. The rest is just noise and empire building. Without a full menu of destinations, what's the point of being a hub of uses? There's so many better sites for non-air uses out there.

I disagree - such devopment is an integral part of attracting people to use YEG and stay as a base or overnight to connect on a secondary flight. We need to build a complete package for travellers (other than locals). That is what is happening globally and EIA has the area to do that. Revenue is used to enduce new flights and for operating and maintenance as well as new capital projects.

Obviously you don't understand the new economics of air service land development. EIA is doing a good job.

I think you over-estimate the number of flyers that would take advantage of more than a place to sleep.

Office? Retail? In the midst of nothing else?

Keep your eye on the prize, YEG: real airlines to real destinations.

In the midst of nothing? Do you not realise this is located from a business nod with some high income? Also easily accessible from Edmonton? In a short sighted view, yes maybe it appears to be in the "midst of nothing" but when you look at the current demographics, along with the 5-10 year developments in that area you quickly realise the potential.

Why do you think they are developing this land? As a non-profit they are going to spend the revenues on attracting new airservice and airport services...which will help in keeping your fees as the customer lower. Do a simple business canvas and you see the gain.

The land fronting the highway is prime for commercial uses. Hotels, retail, professional services are all willing to pay the premium for it....I don't think traditional airport users are.

^ Really.....Commercial property in the vicinity of airports, is very valuable.

There's a lot of activity in the area around the airport and is primed for growth. All hotels around YEG are running at least 90% day in and day out. There's so much demand for good quality lodging in there.

Sure, let's canvas Qualico and ask them how successful their plans were to turn that area into a monstrous (white elephant) suburban office and industrial complex. Let's see how politically adjusted Qualico's response is.

I am well, very well aware of potential synergies at airports. I just laugh when YEG would rather build a real estate empire that the market doesn't need when they can't even build a respectable destination network.

^ How about they generate additional income that allows them to fund incentives towards attracting new carriers and new routes!!!

This ain't no white elephant my friend.

YEG doesn't have a respectable destination network? Really? For a non-hub airport please show something in Canada or the United States that does better for the size of city we are.... Including 1 non-stop year round service with FI and 9mths with AC. Outside of yearround with AC to LHR issues, what else do you think EIA should have today (not 10 years from today). Obviously DFW is in the works, and LHR is a sore point, but they are working on it.

YEG is bloated with sun destinations and comparatively devoid of business and Euro destinations. The amount of Euro travel routed through Canadian connections I'm guessing is vast.

Maybe YEG is just reflective of Edmonton's overall desired connectedness: all-inclusives and Vegas.

So Seattle, Houston, Denver, Phoenix, LA, San Fran, Chicago, New York, London, and soon hopefully Dallas are all sun destinations? Again please show how YEG is not providing a superior product. You mentioning charters is just part of the business of YEG.

What business destinations should YEG have today to the United States and Europe that we do not have. Remember we are not a hub for any airline, yet we do have a lot of business here. Obviously FRA or another hub outside LHR or KEF would be nice...but what airline? Do you not think EIA has contacted BA or LH over the whole AC issue with LHR?

I am all for new flights, and agree that should be YEG's main priority. But you've suggested they aren't doing a good job. For me YEG's focus in their business plan seems to tell me that they know they have an uphill battle but they doing fairly well considering. Could they do better...yes...we all can do better at what we do.

All Canadian airports are bloated with Sun destinations. YEG is no different.

Look at YYZ and compare it with say Chicago or Washington. Will that make YYZ a sun destination airport?

We happen to have a harsh winter climate. People here have the means to travel during the winter months...so, the market is being served.

Now, let's talk about Chicago, Denver, San Fran, Seattle, Minneapolis, Newark and Houston...Are they Sun destinations in your opinion? They are served to cater to both leisure and business travelers. And believe we get a lot of business travelers here. They may not be the Armani suits type, but we get business pax way more than you think.
