While I give this a zero chance of getting done. I do like how the entire article is one big chest pumping piece. We don't see nearly enough of that.

This is like the 4th iteration of this tower I've seen.

We need an iconic structure for this city and this could be it.

If your going to build something might as well go for record height.

This is more than just a building. It's a statement.

That would be cool! though we would obviously win And If we started battling for Western Canada's tallest building, I wonder if Vancouver would try to get involved...

This is a nice design, but you can't put a building this tall in a city where the next tallest is about half the height, it would look too stupid!

Agreed Ken but buildings of this height are more then just concrete and steel.

They celebrate a brashness and confidence that this city needs to portray in substance as well as words.

True, but while this is almost twice as tall as the next few tallest, the rendering makes it look like it would be more than that. It would still look odd because it's so tall and at one extreme edge of the highrise cluster, but it wouldn't be as oversized as the render.

But since the developer is a fairly small-time operator with one 4-story building to finish, a 30ish story building just starting excavation, and a 5-building complex including a 16-story in queue before this one, we could easily have a couple of ~200 to 225m buildings up before this one even starts. Plus a dozen or more ~100m+ towers close by.

Calgarian: While some folks might think this is silly, maybe not so. When Chicago (and I know Edmonton isn't Chicago) built the John Hancock building, the tallest thing north of the Chicago river was the Tribune Tower & the Palmolive Building, both were around 400'. The Hancock is 1127'!! And it is over a mile north of the Loop (core) So that turned out OK! I love this proposal!!

Area housing starts expected to rise

Edmonton Journal

Friday, November 01, 2013

A strong job market and heightened migration are boosting the Edmonton-region housing market, according to the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corp's Fall 2013 Housing Market Outlook.

Total housing starts in the Edmonton census metropolitan area are forecast to reach 13,900 units in 2013, up eight per cent from 2012. In 2014, housing starts are forecast to moderate to 12,200 units.

Residential MLS sales are forecast to total 18,600 in 2013, up five per cent over 2012. In 2014, MLS sales are forecast to rise two per cent to 19,000.

By year-end 2013, average resale MLS prices will reach $345,000, up three per cent over 2012. The CMHC forecasts the average MLS price will rise another two per cent in 2014 to $353,000, as balanced market conditions persist.

Next year is not going to be a fun one in the industry. It seems every developer is talking about ramping up the number of lots they plan on bring on, but we are once again going to be limited by the capacity of underground and surface contractors. If we get another shitty rainy june and july....look out.

It's amazing how many random people with otherwise no interest in downtown construction are talking about this BCM proposal with excitment.

It was the picture and story of the Hampton House years ago in the journal that got me interested in Downtown. Up until that point I never once considered living downtown... I can't help but think that there are many people feeling that same way this morning.

Let's be deadly honest. The promoter for this project, it's hard to call them serious developers, don't have the depth to pull this off. Classic pump and dump, in a real estate context.

Such a seriously b-list location, and don't give me that arena song and dance. Put this somewhere like the Commonwealth site or along Jasper instead.

Yep. Would be well suited for the commonwealth site.
