Be honest. Does anyone actually believe this? I've met ex-drug addict high school dropouts who've figured out that "building more stuff when you're barely using what you've got means something, somewhere has to give."

I think developers just pitch the idea to city council and they approve it because when new things are going up, it makes it seem like they're successful governors trying to fix the city's problems. Never mind all that hollowed-out stuff elsewhere.

Here's some news.

A Chinese medical technology company has made a long-awaited announcement that it will set up shop in London.

After a meeting with Mayor Joe Fontana on Wednesday, the Jinshan Science and Technology Group announced it would open an office in the city's core this fall to work with local researchers to develop some of their digital medical devices.

Jinshan develops and manufactures miniaturized medical technology, including the capsule endoscopy system - a tiny camera that is swallowed by patients to show doctors their internal organs.

The device is being used in more than 3000 hospitals in 62 countries around the world and the company is donating one of the systems to be used for clinical trials in London.

'“London has great potential and is very attractive for investments. London has all the attributes of health, affordability, quality of life and has an exciting future,” said founder Jinsan Wang.

The groundwork for the deal was laid back in Sept. 2011, when Jinsan officials visited London. Fontana soon followed up with a 12-day city trade mission to China, which included a stop at Chongqing, a city of 35 million which is home to Jinsan Inc. When Fontana returned he promised the trip would generate jobs for London.

“This is a great beginning for London and for a great Chinese company we have been courting for more than a year,” Fontana said in a statement Thursday.

Wang is also head of the Minshang Investment Group and said he also plans to open a branch of the Minshang Bank in London, pending regulatory approval.

Along with the new branch, the Minshang Bank is scouting out potential business investments in the city.

That's great news and even better that it's downtown. It will bring more downtown hi-tech jobs, fill in some unused office space and maybe even led to a office development.
Any idea how many jobs it will entail?

Also, great news about Fanshawe buying Market Tower.

Sears Masonville to close by the end of February

I'm surprised they're not going to close the Westmount Sears instead. That place is dead.
-Must be rent costs.

^ Cadillac Fairview is buying the lease back from Sears so that means Masonville wants Sears out of the mall. I'm pretty sure they want them gone because there is someone waiting to get in the mall. Since Sears is a bland, boring shop that belongs in the 80's, this is good news for consumers. A store like Nordstrom or Saks would do wonders for the mall and give London a high quality department store. Maybe the mall would even expand to accommodate other stores.

Not a surprise, there's plenty of potential stores that could do more with the space than Sears. While a Nordstrom or Saks would be a big improvement, they're still not price competitive with the US stores in price or selection. I went to Target in Westmount today after a movie and while they have a nice, modern store, their selection and prices are quite average. I've never been to the US Target, which people rant and rave about, Canadian version seems unspectacular. Canadian versions of these stores need to be as similar to their US version of stores, in price and selection, otherwise all they'll do is showroom for people to buy online or lose business to cross boarder shopping.

Anyways this is what I thought when Sears was closing stores

Its possible the mall could expand, its added lots of new stores (Apple, Victoria Secret, Forever 21 etc). I could see more stores coming such as Zara.

Its also possible Nordstorm could take the place, but can London really support one?

Yes! There is obviously a reason why Masonville wanted Sears to leave...

Look at the other locations
-Eaton Centre
-Sherway Gardens
-Markville
-Richmond Centre

These are all larger city centre stores, there has to be a reason why the Masonville Store is closing... Something is coming!

Masonville has gone under tons of retail changes over the past 5 years...

Indeed. I hope you are right. Nobody shops at Sears anymore. Walking in is like taking a time machine back to the early 1980s.

That's what I am thinking, for Masonville to basically ask them to leave you have to assume they have something big planned to take over the space. It would be a good spot for Nordstrom.
